Best Low-Wattage Air Fryers: What to Compare Before You Buy

A 650 W air fryer is a useful low-wattage example, but wattage alone cannot predict meal costs. Compare cooking energy, time, capacity and local compatibility.

The clearest low-wattage example in the available product evidence is Midea’s 4 L MAD40007ADA, rated at 650 W on Midea Indonesia’s product page. That rating does not show how much electricity a meal takes to cook. To estimate running costs, consider cooking time, batch size, and your electricity rate alongside wattage—and check that the model is sold and electrically compatible where you live.

What counts as a low-wattage air fryer?

Wattage is the rate at which an appliance draws electrical power while operating; it is not the energy used to cook a particular meal. Energy use is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh) and depends on how long the appliance runs and how its heating element cycles.

Midea Indonesia lists the MAD40007ADA as a digital 4 L air fryer rated at 650 W. Midea describes it as delivering “powerful cooking performance with only 650 watts of power while keeping electricity usage low.” That is the manufacturer’s product claim, not an independent test result. The page establishes a product example, not the lowest-wattage model available in every market. Check the exact model, voltage, plug, local warranty, and availability before buying.

Does lower wattage mean lower electricity use?

Not necessarily. A lower-rated appliance may need more time to cook the same food, and an appliance’s element may cycle rather than draw its rated power continuously. A useful comparison therefore looks at energy for a representative cooking task, where measured figures are available, rather than wattage alone.

National Energy Action’s 2025 report gives a limited comparison of two air fryers: a Ninja AF160 used 0.103 kWh and a Shanben HB-8031 used 0.105 kWh when each ran at 160°C for 10 minutes. At 180°C for 10 minutes, the figures were 0.136 kWh and 0.138 kWh; at 200°C for 10 minutes, they were 0.20 kWh and 0.184 kWh. The report notes that the Shanben’s 8% lower reading at 200°C may reflect methodology rather than a genuine saving. These short tests do not establish which model uses less energy for a full recipe.

How much does an air fryer cost to run?

Use your own electricity unit rate and the appliance’s actual operating time. National Energy Action’s April 2025 leaflet, written for a UK audience, gives this estimate: “Appliance running cost (p/hr) = Power rating (W) x Electricity unit rate (p/kWh) ÷ 1000”. It is a rated-power estimate per hour; actual use can differ because of time in use and cycling. To estimate a meal’s cost, use the energy consumed in kWh for that cooking task, if you have a reliable measurement, and multiply it by your own price per kWh.

For a fair buying comparison, record the rated wattage, usable capacity, cooking time and measured kWh for the same representative recipe. Include likely batches: a small basket may require cooking portions separately, while fitting too much food into one batch may not suit the recipe. The cited product listings do not provide comparable measured recipe-energy results for their models.

Is an air fryer cheaper to run than an oven?

National Energy Action’s report reproduces a BBC Sliced Bread comparison in which chicken legs used 1.05 kWh in an oven over 35 minutes and 0.43 kWh in an air fryer over 20 minutes. For a jacket potato, it reports 1.31 kWh in an oven over one hour and 0.55 kWh in an air fryer over 35 minutes. The air-fryer model was not specified, so these are task-specific results, not a universal prediction for every appliance or recipe.

The same report says its own testing suggested some ovens could use less for jacket potatoes: an AEG oven may use 0.9 kWh for that task. Differences in appliance, food, method, and cooking duration matter; do not treat these figures as a guaranteed saving for your home.

How should you compare capacity and wattage?

Capacity helps determine whether an appliance suits the portions you actually cook. The 4 L Midea example is listed at 650 W, while Sharp Consumer lists its 4 L GS404AEB at 1300 W. Those manufacturer-listed ratings illustrate why it is useful to consider capacity and power together; they are not a head-to-head efficiency test. Neither figure shows the energy required for an equivalent meal.

Choose capacity around your usual portion size and whether the food can fit without multiple batches. The available evidence does not establish one ideal size for all households. When checking any candidate, compare:

  • Rated wattage and usable basket capacity.
  • Portion size and likely number of batches.
  • Cooking time and measured kWh for a representative recipe, if available.
  • Your local electricity price per kWh.
  • Controls, cleaning requirements, local electrical compatibility, and warranty.

What to verify before ordering

  • Confirm that the exact model is available in your country and that its voltage and plug match local requirements.
  • Read the manufacturer’s current local instructions for electrical setup, ventilation, clearance, and cleaning.
  • Check local warranty terms and the basket capacity against the portions you expect to cook.

A low wattage rating does not by itself establish electrical safety. The ENERGY STAR specification cited for fryers covers commercial open deep-fat fryers, not household countertop air fryers, so it is not a basis for ranking home models.
