It has one nodding flower on each stem and gets its nutrients through fungi rather than ordinary green-plant photosynthesis. That fungal relationship also explains why it is difficult to grow outside its woodland habitat.
How to identify ghost pipe
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew describes Monotropa uniflora as a slender, white plant up to 30 cm tall, with reduced translucent leaves and a single nodding flower per stem. Its pale color makes it conspicuous against forest litter, but identification is stronger when based on the whole set of traits rather than color alone.
After pollination, the flower forms a small, ribbed orange capsule—about 6 mm across in Kew’s profile—with many tiny seeds. As the plant dries, the stem darkens to brown-black. For identification details, see Kew’s ghost plant profile.
Distinguishing it from a similar species
North Carolina State University Extension contrasts M. uniflora with Monotropa hypopitys: the latter has several flowers per stem and red flowers in fall, while ghost pipe has one white flower per stem and a less predictable flowering schedule. Use multiple features and a local flora or field guide when identifying a plant, since timing and appearance can vary.

Why ghost pipe is white
Ghost pipe is mycoheterotrophic: it obtains nutrition through associated fungi rather than relying on the usual green-plant photosynthesis pathway. Kew identifies its fungal associates as members of the Russulaceae family. The relationship described by these sources is mediated by fungi; it should not be simplified as direct parasitism of nearby trees. See the explanations from North Carolina State University Extension and Kew’s accepted-name record.
Where it grows
Kew describes ghost pipe as a plant of moist temperate forests where suitable fungi are present. Its native range is broad, extending from northern Pakistan to the Russian Far East and Japan, and across North America from Canada to Mexico. That range does not mean it occurs at every site within those regions: local conditions and fungal partners matter.

In its regional account, the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program notes a preference for upland forests under mixed hardwoods and pines. That is a North Carolina habitat observation, not a rule for the species everywhere. For location-specific records, consult local botanical or natural-heritage sources. Kew’s species record and the North Carolina flora account provide range and regional context.
Can you grow ghost pipe at home?
Usually, not reliably. North Carolina State University Extension describes cultivation as very difficult: transplanted plants need abundant woodland humus and the appropriate fungi. An ordinary garden bed or commercial potting mix should not be expected to provide that specialized setting, and the sources do not establish a dependable home-growing method.

Because its needs are tied to a woodland fungal relationship, observing ghost pipe in its habitat is more realistic than trying to transplant it. A field guide can help with identification, but it does not make cultivation feasible.

Kew records food and medicinal uses and notes that ghost pipe has been used in herbal medicine as an anti-anxiety treatment. These are records of reported use, not evidence of clinical effectiveness or a safe dose. The cited sources do not establish safety for self-treatment, so this history should not be taken as medical advice.
