The best microwave egg cooker depends on how you want your eggs prepared. A cooker for scrambled or fried eggs is not interchangeable with a water-based boiler for eggs in their shells, and an egg poacher has its own method. Match the device to the preparation, then follow its exact instructions and your microwave’s guidance.
Which kind of microwave egg cooker do you need?
Start with the result you want. The products below use different methods, so their steps and safety precautions are not interchangeable.

How to choose by preparation
For scrambled or fried eggs
The OXO Microwave Egg Cooker is the clearest fit among these products if you want scrambled or fried eggs, including eggs for a breakfast sandwich. Its removable base and stay-cool handles are practical features, but use the product’s instructions for the quantity and cooking sequence rather than borrowing timings from a boiler or poacher.

For shell-on boiled eggs
The Nordic Ware Egg Boiler is designed for up to four eggs cooked with water and an aluminum insert. Its instructions vary cooking time by microwave wattage and desired doneness. The Akebono maker is another two-egg option, but its manufacturer limits the cited model to domestic microwave ovens in Japan; do not assume it is suitable for other regional microwave systems.
For poached eggs
The Nordic Ware Egg Poacher uses a separate method: gently prick the yolk, add water, cook in short intervals, and let the eggs stand before opening. Do not apply these steps to an unrelated cooker.

Why there is no universal microwave cooking time
Microwave power and desired doneness affect the timing. Nordic Ware’s boiler instructions provide separate times for 600-, 800-, and 1200-watt microwaves and for soft, medium, and hard eggs; the cited information does not provide the actual time values, so no single number can be given here. Check the instructions supplied with your exact model and use its wattage guidance.
For the Nordic Ware poacher, the manufacturer calls for short cooking intervals and frequent checking rather than one universal cook time. Use that approach only for the poacher and its stated method.

Safety: distinguish manufacturer methods from general microwave guidance
GE Appliances states: “Boiling eggs in and out of the shell is not recommended for microwave cooking.” GE warns that pressure can build inside the yolk and cause it to burst, potentially resulting in injury. This general warning matters especially when considering shell-on eggs; it does not make different cooker designs or instructions equivalent.
Use only a device and method whose instructions match that exact product, and consult the microwave manufacturer’s guidance as well. A product’s dedicated instructions do not establish that every microwave or every egg-cooking method is appropriate.

- The Nordic Ware poacher instructions warn about hot steam and recommend a hot pad. Open it carefully after the specified standing time.
- Do not transfer piercing, water amounts, cooking intervals, or opening procedures between models.
Care and regional compatibility
OXO lists its cooker as dishwasher-safe. Nordic Ware recommends hand washing its boiler and says dishwasher use is not recommended because it may discolor or warp the product. The cited Akebono model is specifically limited by its manufacturer to domestic microwave ovens in Japan. Check the instructions and regional compatibility of any model before use.
