An opaque, airtight tea tin or caddy is the simplest default for storing loose leaf tea. Choose one with a lid that seals well, keep it in a cool, dry, dark place, and use a separate container for strongly scented teas. Ceramic and glass containers can also work, but only when their seals are reliable and the tea is protected from light.
What matters when choosing a tea container
Tea storage is about limiting exposure to light, air, moisture, heat, and strong odors. TWG Tea recommends airtight, opaque tins for loose-leaf tea (TWG Tea storage guidance); Teas.co.uk likewise advises choosing a size suited to the amount of tea and keeping teas, especially scented varieties, separate (Teas.co.uk storage guidance).
- Opacity: A container that blocks light avoids the exposure a clear jar gets on an open shelf.
- Seal: A well-fitting lid helps limit air and odor exposure. Material or appearance alone does not establish that a container is airtight.
- Odor neutrality: Keep tea away from strong smells, and use separate containers for teas with distinct scents.
- Size: Match the container to the quantity you have, rather than choosing a large caddy that leaves more room than you need.

Where to keep the container
Store tea in a cool, dry, dark place, away from direct light, heat, humidity, and strong odors. A well-sealed tin cannot compensate for a hot, damp, or sunlit storage spot. A cupboard away from heat sources is a practical choice; keep strongly scented foods and other odor sources away from the tea.
Is refrigeration necessary?
Everyday tea storage does not need to involve a refrigerator based on the guidance cited here. Dilmah Brew Academy’s 2022 advice treats refrigeration as conditional: tea must be in an airtight container to guard against moisture and food odors, and condensation must be prevented (Dilmah Brew Academy storage guidance). If you do refrigerate tea, avoid opening a cold container where condensation could form; otherwise, a cool, dry cupboard is the straightforward option.

How long does loose leaf tea stay fresh?
The cited storage guidance does not establish a specific shelf life or a quantified freshness benefit for any container. Do not rely on a promise that a particular tin will double freshness or guarantee a fixed duration. Focus instead on reducing exposure to light, air, moisture, heat, and strong odors.
