There is no defensible, apples-to-apples winner for active cooking efficiency among the microwave models covered here: U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) materials do not provide a standardized active-cooking efficiency score for ranking them. For an energy-conscious purchase, compare the right installation type, fit, cooking features and power controls—and treat savings figures as manufacturer claims unless they come from comparable independent testing.
What counts as an energy-efficient microwave?
Cooking output in watts describes a microwave’s rated output, not how much electricity it uses to heat a particular meal. Capacity, cooking time, food quantity and the chosen settings also matter, so wattage alone cannot establish which model uses less energy per meal.
In the U.S., DOE’s microwave test procedure covers standby and off-mode energy. DOE’s 2023 final rule says there is no prescribed procedure for measuring active-mode cooking efficiency and no active-mode energy conservation standard for the covered classes. The agency also notes that an available procedure does not account for inverter efficiency improvements. As a result, the cited federal materials can inform standby requirements, but they cannot establish a comparative active-cooking winner.
DOE says manufacturers have been required to comply with U.S. microwave energy conservation standards since 2016. Its standards page lists amended standards compliance beginning June 22, 2026, and also lists a proposed rescission dated May 16, 2025. The page describes rescission as proposed, not completed; check the current status before relying on the regulatory timeline. DOE microwave-oven standards · DOE 2023 final rule

Energy-conscious microwave examples
These examples illustrate different evidence types, not a ranked efficiency test. The LG and Panasonic pages are for non-U.S. markets, so verify the local model, voltage and availability before considering either for a U.S. kitchen.
| Model or listing | Configuration and listed information | What the energy evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
| LG MS3032JAS (Saudi Arabia product page) | Smart Inverter feature; the cited page describes varying temperature or wattage for cooking functions. | LG says the feature is designed to help reduce power usage. This is a manufacturer description, not an independently verified savings result or a claim about every LG microwave. LG product page |
| Panasonic NN-GD371 (UK product page) | 950 W inverter microwave with grill. | Panasonic claims 10% operating energy savings and 50% lower standby consumption for this product. The page does not establish the comparison baseline or independent verification. Panasonic product page |
| Whirlpool WMH78019HZ (U.S. comparison listing) | 1.9 cu. ft. over-the-range model; listed cooking power is 1,100 W. | The comparison listing identifies it as ENERGY STAR qualified. That qualification is not a comparative active-cooking efficiency test. Whirlpool comparison listing |
How to choose for your kitchen
Match the installation type
- Countertop: Check available counter space, outlet access and door clearance.
- Over-the-range: Confirm cabinet and cooktop clearances, ventilation needs and the exact installation requirements.
- Built-in: Verify the model is designed for the intended enclosure and that the required trim kit and clearances are specified.
These configurations solve different kitchen-layout needs; one should not be treated as inherently more energy efficient based on installation type.

Check capacity, dimensions and functions
Compare interior capacity and exterior dimensions against the dishes you use and the space available. A larger cavity may suit larger cookware, but capacity alone does not show energy use per meal. Note whether you need features such as a grill, convection cooking, sensor programs or simple reheating controls.
Understand power control and energy claims
An inverter varies delivered power rather than relying only on repeated full-power bursts to manage lower settings. That may help with some cooking tasks, but the feature name does not prove lower total electricity use in everyday cooking. Look for a clearly described function and a stated, comparable test if a seller claims a specific saving.

For example, LG describes its Smart Inverter as varying temperature or wattage and says it is designed to help reduce power use. Panasonic’s NN-GD371 page gives specific operating and standby savings claims. Both remain manufacturer claims in the cited material, not independent head-to-head results.

What to check before buying in the U.S.
- Confirm the complete model number, local availability, voltage and dimensions for the market where you will use it.
- Compare cooking output and capacity only alongside the features and installation type you actually need; neither figure is an active-efficiency rating.
- Check the current ENERGY STAR listing and understand what it establishes. Qualification is not proof that a model uses less electricity during active cooking than a competing microwave.
- Use standby or off-mode information for that limited purpose rather than as a proxy for energy consumed while cooking.
- Review DOE’s current standards page for the applicable U.S. requirements and regulatory status.
