The right ladder ball set depends on where you will play and how you will store it. Published product specifications show a practical choice between a foldable PVC frame and a steel frame, while included bolas, carrying options and age guidance vary by model. The available specifications do not establish that either frame lasts longer in real use, so treat these as feature comparisons—not tested rankings.
What a ladder ball set includes
Ladder ball, also called ladder toss or ladder golf, is played with ladder-shaped targets and bolas: two balls joined by a cord. A set commonly includes two targets and six bolas, but package contents are model-specific. For example, Franklin Sports lists six bolas, while Costway lists six red and six blue balls. Check the exact listing for the set you plan to buy.
One published ruleset from LadderBall.org describes play by two or more players or teams. Each player throws three bolas per round, scoring three points for the top rung, two for the middle and one for the bottom. Under this ruleset, the goal is exactly 21 points after a round; if a player goes over, that player does not score the points from that round. The page also describes optional bonuses and overtime, so these are rules for that particular version rather than a universal standard.
How to compare ladder ball sets
Frame material and design
Documented examples include PVC or plastic targets and steel construction. Franklin Sports’ Starter Ladderball uses PVC targets with folding joints; University Games’ Ladderball Pro Steel uses powder-coated steel and weighted legs. These specifications identify construction, not comparative strength or durability. Choose based on the design and storage details you need rather than assuming one material will last longer.

Compare assembled size with the space available for play and storage. Franklin lists targets measuring 36 by 24 inches and says the frames fold into a compact unit. University Games lists its assembled steel set at 23 inches wide by 37 inches high by 30 inches deep and includes a zippered carrying case. Costway lists a carrying bag. A case or bag can help with transport, but does not by itself establish how compact a set is when packed.
Package contents and scoring
Sets differ in the number and type of bolas, carrying accessories and scoring features. Champion Sports’ LGSTSET retailer listing describes two plastic ladders, six weighted sponge bolas, a carrying case and built-in scoring. Confirm that the listing matches the exact model and package being sold; contents can vary between products.

Age guidance and play setting
University Games recommends its Ladderball Pro Steel for ages 8 and up and describes it for indoor and outdoor play. That recommendation applies to that product, not every set or every child. Follow the selected model’s age guidance and supervise children around thrown bolas.

Follow the rules or instructions for the set you are using: the sources give different distances for different purposes. LadderBall.org describes an official toss line 15 feet away, notes that five paces is commonly used, and says a closer line may suit children’s games. Champion Sports’ LGSTSET instructions instead say to place the two targets 25 feet apart. These are distinct conventions; do not treat them as one agreed distance.

Safety and bola compatibility
- Keep the throwing area clear. Champion Sports says to keep people and structures away from the sides and backs of targets, and not to stand beside a target while an opponent throws.
- LadderBall.org advises against swinging bolas outside normal play, wrapping them around body parts, pulling excessively on their connections, or standing on the ladder. It also advises parents to supervise younger children.
- The cited rules page describes a bola as two balls connected by nylon rope. If you need replacement bolas, check their dimensions and attachment style against your set; compatibility is not established across products.
Which type fits your plans?
