Mint is a hardy perennial that commonly dies back in winter and regrows in spring; its vigorous underground rhizomes are usually the main challenge in a herb garden.
1. Choose a named culinary mint
Spearmint (Mentha spicata) and peppermint (Mentha × piperita) are traditional culinary choices. Mint varieties differ in flavour, appearance, size, and vigour, so choose one that suits what you plan to cook and the space you can contain. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recommends checking a plant’s identity and intended use with a reputable supplier; plants called mint are not always true Mentha, and not every Mentha is suited to eating. In particular, the RHS identifies pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) as harmful if eaten. RHS: How to grow Mint
2. Contain the roots before planting
Mint spreads by underground rhizomes, and small pieces left behind can regrow. A pot is usually the simplest way to keep it from taking over nearby planting. If you want mint in a garden bed, the RHS recommends sinking a bottomless container into the soil with its rim left slightly above the surface; this helps stop shoots rooting over the edge. To remove unwanted mint, dig out as much of the rhizome as possible. RHS: How to grow Mint
3. Find a suitable position and growing medium
Most mints tolerate full sun or partial shade and a range of soils. For container-grown plants, aim for moist, fertile conditions and use compost suitable for planting; RHS container guidance recommends peat-free options. The sources do not specify a required pot size or a preferred compost brand, so choose a container that gives the plant room to grow while keeping its roots contained. 4. Water pots and renew crowded plants
Container compost can dry faster than garden soil. Check it through the growing season, particularly in hot, dry weather, and water to keep it evenly moist rather than soggy. If a plant becomes crowded or straggly, divide it or repot it; refreshing the pot every few years is also practical. RHS: Growing Herbs in Containers
5. Pick young tips often
Harvest leaves from late spring to autumn, before stems die back for winter. Pick the young, soft tips regularly: this helps keep the plant compact and encourages fresh growth. If you want to store a surplus, the RHS says freezing preserves mint flavour better than drying. Seasonal timing varies with local climate. RHS: How to grow Mint

Divide an established clump in spring or autumn, take softwood cuttings in spring, or root stems in water before potting them. RHS: How to grow Mint
Encourage fresh growth
After flowering, the RHS recommends cutting the plant back to about 5 cm from the base. Mint commonly dies back over winter and regrows in spring. RHS: Mentha spicata | spearmint
