A motion sensor light usually stays on for its set shutoff delay after the last motion it detects. If it detects more movement during that interval, the timer may reset, keeping the light on longer. There is no universal duration: manufacturer examples range from a few seconds to 20 minutes, depending on the product and its settings.
What controls how long the light stays on?
The timer is generally counted from the last motion detection, not just from when the light first switches on. Leviton Product Support explains that the light turns off at the selected interval once motion is no longer detected. A new detection can extend the on period.
The available delay depends on the fixture, sensor, or wall switch. Some products have a continuously adjustable dial; others offer a few fixed choices. Check the exact model’s instructions for its settings rather than assuming a duration is standard.
How long do different motion sensor lights stay on?
These manufacturer-documented examples show how much settings vary; they are not market-wide standards or recommended durations for every installation.

How to check or adjust the timer
- Identify the product. Find the make and model on the fixture, sensor, or wall switch.
- Look up its instructions. Use the manufacturer’s manual or support page to find the timer control and its available settings.
- Set the delay. On some outdoor floodlights, the control is a dial labeled TIME or ON-TIME. Wallbox sensor switches may instead use programmed delay choices.
- Check the operating mode. Confirm that the product is in its ordinary motion-triggered Auto mode before judging how long its motion timer runs.
Why might a motion sensor light stay on continuously?
Continuous illumination may mean the light is in a mode separate from ordinary motion-triggered operation. One outdoor fixture manual distinguishes Auto, Test, dusk-to-dawn, and manual override modes. In that manual, a quick wall-switch sequence activates manual override for approximately 5.5 hours or until daylight, while dusk-to-dawn mode runs from dusk until dawn. Neither behavior is the Auto-mode motion timeout.
If the light remains on longer than expected, check the model, selected mode, and timer setting first. The documented products have different delays and operating modes, so a long on period alone does not establish that the sensor is faulty.

What to compare if you need a different timeout
- Delay range: Check the shortest and longest settings, and whether the timer is continuously adjustable or offers fixed choices.
- Timer behavior: Confirm whether each newly detected movement resets the countdown.
- Modes: Look for Auto, Test, manual override, and dusk-to-dawn functions, and how each affects the light.
- Installation and rating: Make sure the product is suitable for the intended indoor or outdoor location.
- Product type: Distinguish a complete light fixture from a separate motion sensor switch.
