A fuse or circuit breaker is there to interrupt a circuit when current becomes unsafe; it does not make the panel or incoming supply harmless. The basic principle is simple: a protective device opens the circuit, stopping current from flowing through that branch.
What a fuse box does
The box connects the incoming electrical supply to branch circuits serving things such as lights, sockets and appliances. Each circuit has a protective device selected for the circuit’s wiring and use. If a monitored condition exceeds the device’s operating limits, it disconnects that circuit rather than allowing current to continue unchecked.
A typical installation may include a main switch that can isolate the installation, along with fuses or circuit breakers. Some panels also contain devices for other hazards, such as electric shock or electrical arcing. The exact layout and device names vary by country and by installation. Parts of a panel can remain dangerous even when a switch is off, so internal work should be left to a qualified professional.
How the protective devices differ
| Device | What it detects | What it does | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuse | Excess current, or overcurrent | A fusible element heats and melts, opening the circuit. | Single-use: it must be replaced with the specified type and rating. Never fit a higher-rated fuse. |
| Circuit breaker | Excess current; specialized breakers can monitor additional fault types | A mechanism trips open and interrupts the circuit. | It can be reset after the underlying cause is addressed. Repeated trips call for investigation, not repeated resets. |
| RCD (UK) / GFCI (US) | Leakage or fault current associated with shock risk | Disconnects power when it detects the monitored condition. | It provides a different kind of protection from ordinary overcurrent devices; it does not simply duplicate a fuse or breaker. |
| AFCI (US) | Certain electrical arcing patterns | Trips to help reduce fire risk from arc faults. | Availability and installation requirements depend on the local electrical code and its adoption. |
Fuses
Current passes through a fusible link inside the fuse. If the current becomes excessive, the link heats until it melts, physically breaking the circuit. The US Department of Energy’s DOE Fundamentals Handbook: Electrical Science, Volume 4 describes a fuse as protecting a circuit from an overcurrent condition. Once the link has melted, the fuse cannot be reset; replacement must match the specified type and rating.

Circuit breakers
A circuit breaker uses a switching mechanism that opens when current—or another condition monitored by a specialized breaker—meets its trip criteria. Unlike a fuse, it can usually be reset once the cause has been dealt with. A tripped breaker may sit between ON and OFF; follow its label and operating instructions rather than forcing it.
RCDs, GFCIs and AFCIs
An RCD or GFCI monitors for leakage or fault current associated with shock risk. An ordinary fuse or breaker is not a substitute for this protection. An AFCI monitors for certain arcing patterns that can create a fire risk. These devices address different hazards, and which types are present or required depends on the country, the installation and the applicable code.

Why a fuse blows or a breaker trips
A fuse or ordinary breaker commonly opens a circuit when it detects excess current. This can happen when a circuit is overloaded or when there is a fault. Specialized breakers may also trip in response to other monitored conditions, such as certain arc faults. The device shutting off is a protective response, not proof that the problem has been fixed.
One trip can follow a temporary overload, but a fuse that fails repeatedly or a breaker that trips again points to a cause that needs attention. Do not keep resetting a breaker or fitting replacement fuses without resolving the problem.

What to do when a circuit loses power
If a breaker trips and there are no warning signs
- Unplug or switch off likely loads on the affected circuit.
- Identify the tripped breaker using the panel labels and the device’s instructions. If its position is unclear, do not guess or open the panel.
- Move it fully to OFF and then back to ON if its design requires that reset sequence.
- Observe whether the circuit remains on. If the breaker trips again, leave it off and contact a qualified electrician.
If you find warning signs
Do not attempt a reset if the panel or nearby wiring is hot, smells burnt, shows scorch marks, or makes buzzing or crackling sounds. Keep clear and arrange professional help. If there is smoke or fire, follow emergency procedures.
Do not defeat the protection
- Do not open the panel, touch exposed conductors or bypass a protective device.
- Do not increase a fuse or breaker rating to stop it operating. A higher rating can leave wiring at risk of overheating and fire; ESFI specifically warns that putting a 30-amp fuse in a 20-amp circuit is a fire hazard.
- Do not keep resetting a repeatedly tripping breaker or replacing repeatedly blown fuses in place of finding the cause.
Consumer units and breaker panels: regional terms
In the UK, a consumer unit commonly contains a main switch and circuit breakers or fuses, and may include RCD protection. In the US, a service panel or breaker panel distributes circuits and may contain breakers, fuses in older installations, and AFCI or GFCI protection. These are high-level descriptions, not a guarantee of what a particular property contains. Wiring arrangements, device names and legal requirements depend on location and installation.

Inspection and RCD testing in the UK
Electrical Safety First advises homeowners in the UK to arrange an electrical installation inspection at least every ten years, and landlords to arrange testing at least every five years. These are UK recommendations, not universal intervals or a substitute for local rules.
Electrical Safety First also advises testing an RCD using its test button every three months. If it does not trip or reset as expected, seek a registered electrician. Check current local guidance rather than treating this interval as a worldwide rule. Where a UK consumer unit lacks RCD protection, Electrical Safety First notes that a plug-in RCD adapter can provide extra protection at an individual socket; it does not repair a fault or replace appropriate fixed protection or professional inspection.
