For a lawn with a very steep interior slope, the clearest manufacturer-documented candidate here is the Husqvarna Automower 435 iQ AWD: Husqvarna rates it for slopes up to 70% (about 35 degrees) inside its work area. That is a model-specific manufacturer rating, not a promise about boundary edges, wet grass, or every property. For a riding or zero-turn mower, follow the exact machine’s manual; the guidance cited here sets lower limits and prohibits crossing slopes in some cases.
Which mower is best for a steep hill?
The right choice depends on where the steep ground is and what kind of mower can safely operate there. A robotic mower designed for steep interior terrain is the most clearly documented option in the sources cited here. For banks near drop-offs, ditches, embankments, or water, manufacturer safety guidance favors a walk-behind mower or hand trimmer rather than riding equipment.
There is no universal “safe slope” rating for a mower category. Ratings and instructions are specific to the model, the part of the property being mowed, and operating conditions. The cited sources are manufacturer specifications and safety directions, not independent comparative tests.
Top options by terrain and mower type
Husqvarna Automower 435 iQ AWD: a documented steep-slope robotic option
Husqvarna states that the Automower 435 iQ AWD handles slopes up to 70%—approximately 35 degrees—inside its work area. The product page also describes all-wheel drive, an articulated body, and wire-free EPOS boundaries. The crucial qualification is “inside its work area”: do not assume the same slope capacity applies at a boundary or edge. Check that the mower’s boundary and installation setup suit your property, and consult the product instructions for site-specific requirements. See Husqvarna’s Automower 435 iQ AWD specifications.

- 23 HP Kawasaki engine provides reliable startups and a max speed of 6.5 MPH
- Hydrostatic, no-maintenance transmission is worry free, empowering the mower to take on a variety of cutting conditions
- ClearCut deck offers a best-in-class 54 in. cut and better bagging thanks to its deep deck design, superior air flow and high-performance blades
- Clippings can be discharged, mulched or bagged (mulching kit and bagger attachment sold separately)
- Comfortable seat, ergonomic control panel and anti-slip foot area make mowing intuitive and safe
Husqvarna TS 275XD: traction features, but no published slope limit on the cited page
The TS 275XD 42-inch riding mower is listed with an automatic locking differential, all-terrain rear tires, hydrostatic transmission, and a fabricated deck. Those features describe equipment, not a maximum safe grade. The cited product page does not state a maximum slope, so they are not enough to recommend this model for a particular steep hill. Find the operator manual for the exact machine and use its slope limits. Review the Husqvarna TS 275XD specifications.
Walk-behind mower or hand trimmer: for hazardous edges and banks
Toro advises using a walk-behind mower or hand trimmer around drop-offs, ditches, embankments, and water. This is a safer equipment choice to consider where the hazard or edge matters more than ride-on convenience; select and operate any mower according to its own manual.

Can a riding mower or zero-turn mow a steep hill?
Only within the slope limits and operating directions for that exact machine. The cited manufacturer guidance illustrates why a single rule for all riding mowers is misleading:
| Guidance | Slope instruction | What it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Husqvarna riding mower support | Do not drive up or down slopes greater than 15 degrees; do not drive across any slope. | The riding-mower guidance at the linked support page, not every riding mower. |
| Husqvarna zero-turn support | Do not drive the referenced rider on terrain steeper than 10 degrees; mow up and down, never across. | The zero-turn guidance at the linked support page, not every zero-turn model. |
| Toro zero-turn safety tips | Stay off hills or surfaces with a slope greater than 15 degrees. | Toro’s cited zero-turn safety guidance. |
Read the exact model’s operator manual before mowing. A general support page or another mower’s rating cannot override the instructions supplied for your machine.

Why a slope rating is not a guarantee of safe mowing
A published maximum describes a manufacturer’s stated capability under the scope given; it does not establish that mowing will be safe on every surface or in every condition. Toro warns that wet grass, downhill travel, unstable ground, and changes in terrain can reduce traction or control. A slope that seemed manageable when dry may become hazardous after rain or when the ground is uneven.
Also distinguish an interior slope from a boundary, bank, or edge. The 435 iQ AWD’s 70% figure applies inside its work area. For riding equipment, a slope may be unacceptable even if the machine has traction-oriented features. Do not infer safe operation from tire type, differential, drivetrain, or a different model’s number.

How to assess the hill before choosing a mower
- Measure the slope. Toro’s operator manual recommends using an angle indicator to estimate slope. Record the grade where the mower would actually travel, rather than relying on a visual impression.
- Locate edges and hazards. Mark drop-offs, ditches, embankments, water, and abrupt terrain changes. Toro advises keeping at least twice the mower’s width between the mower and hazards.
- Match the measurement to the exact manual. Check the limits and mowing direction instructions for the precise model. Do not use a category-wide rule or another model’s rating as a substitute.
- Account for surface and weather. Reconsider mowing when grass is wet or the ground is unstable; traction and control can change with conditions.
- Choose a different method where the risk demands it. Use a walk-behind mower or hand trimmer around hazardous edges and banks when riding equipment is not appropriate.
Toro’s instructions and angle-indicator guidance are in its operator manual. The twice-the-width clearance is Toro guidance, not a universal standard for all mower brands.

- Exact slope rating and its scope: whether the maker gives a maximum, and whether it applies to the work area, boundary, or a specified mowing direction.
- How the mower is operated: robotic, seated riding, zero-turn, or walk-behind; each has different practical and safety considerations.
- Property layout: interior slopes, narrow passages, boundaries, obstacles, and edges near hazards may matter as much as the steepest grade.
- Conditions: grass moisture, uneven or unstable ground, and terrain changes can affect traction and control.
- Manual and support: confirm the exact model’s operating limits and instructions before buying or mowing.
Current prices, retailer inventory, and independent field comparisons are not established by the cited sources, so this guide does not rank models by value or tested performance.
