1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe best water purifier for your home is the one certified to reduce the contaminant you are concerned about, in a format your household can install and maintain. Start by checking your water, then verify the exact model’s performance claim; no single treatment system removes every contaminant.
Start with the water concern, not the product category
A filter labelled “purifier” or “removes contaminants” is not necessarily suitable for a particular water problem. Find out what is in your water and choose equipment whose documented reduction claim matches that concern.
If your home uses public water
Review information from your water utility and any available testing. If you are concerned about PFAS, the EPA advises contacting your water provider and consulting available EPA test results. A home filter should supplement, not replace, information about the water source.
If your home uses a private well
Use water testing appropriate to your well and seek treatment advice based on the results. The EPA does not regulate individual private wells or provide standards for individual wells, so a generic filter recommendation cannot establish that well water is safe. See the EPA’s Drinking Water Technologies guidance.

Choose where the system should treat water
For drinking and cooking, most households are choosing between point-of-use equipment at a particular source and a point-of-entry system that treats water for the whole building.
| System format | Best fit | Access and installation |
|---|---|---|
| Pitcher | Drinking water when a simple, portable option is sufficient | Refill manually; no plumbing installation |
| Faucet-mounted | On-demand water at a compatible kitchen faucet | Compatibility varies by faucet |
| Refrigerator filter | Water from a refrigerator dispenser, if the appliance has a filter | Use the filter specified for the refrigerator model |
| Countertop | A drinking-water source without an under-sink installation | Placement and connection depend on the system |
| Under-sink | Regular drinking and cooking water from a dedicated faucet | May require tools or a plumber; many systems use a separate faucet |
| Point-of-entry (whole-house) | A consistent, significant source-water challenge affecting multiple household uses | Installed where water enters the building; may require plumbing changes and professional maintenance |
EPA’s 2025 consumer guide estimates average cartridge life at 2–6 months for faucet filters and pitchers and 6–24+ months for under-sink filters; actual life varies by model, use, and water quality. The same guide gives average prices based on February 2024 prices: $20–$100 for faucet filters, $15–$50 for pitcher filters, and $80–$200+ for under-sink filters, plus a lead-free faucet. These are guide estimates, not current quotes. EPA’s 2024 guide describes basic pitchers and tap filters as typically costing less than $100 with no installation, while whole-house point-of-entry systems can cost thousands and generally need professional installation. Read the EPA 2025 consumer guide for the format-specific details.
A whole-house system does not necessarily solve a problem that arises inside the home: the EPA’s lead guidance cautions that whole-house filters do not remove lead that enters through lead-containing plumbing within the building.

Match the technology and certification to the contaminant
Technology names describe how a system works, not a guarantee that every model reduces every contaminant. Check the exact product’s performance data sheet and an accredited certifier’s listing for the specific reduction claim. Standards identify types of claims; they are not blanket assurances that any water treated by a certified system is safe.
Filtration and activated carbon
Physical barriers, activated carbon, and resins can trap certain contaminants and improve taste or odor. Depending on the claim, filtration products may be evaluated under NSF/ANSI 42, 53, or 401. Filtration as a broad category does not remove nitrates, bacteria, or dissolved minerals as a class. Confirm the target contaminant on the model’s performance sheet.
Reverse osmosis
Reverse osmosis (RO) uses pressure to push water through a membrane, producing treated water and a reject-water stream. NSF/ANSI 58 is the relevant standard identified by the EPA for RO systems. RO can reduce some dissolved inorganic and organic contaminants, but it does not remove all contaminants and also removes beneficial minerals such as calcium. Installation and maintenance can cost more than simpler options.

Water use is another trade-off. The EPA’s 2024 WaterSense guide estimates that point-of-use RO systems typically waste at least five gallons for every gallon treated; some inefficient models can waste up to ten gallons. WaterSense-labeled models generate no more than 2.3 gallons of reject water per gallon treated. These figures describe the guide’s system categories, not a prediction for every product.
Distillation
Distillers boil water and collect the vapor after it condenses. NSF/ANSI 62 is the standard identified by the EPA. Distillation can reduce several categories, including nitrates, microbes, dissolved solids, heavy metals, and radionuclides, but some volatile compounds and pesticides may remain. It uses energy, and bacterial growth can occur on cooling coils during inactive periods.

UV systems pass water through a lamp chamber to inactivate biological contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. The EPA identifies NSF/ANSI 55 for UV treatment. UV does not address chemical contaminants such as heavy metals or organic compounds, so it is not a stand-alone solution for those concerns.

For lead reduction, the EPA’s 2025 guide advises looking for NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction, including dissolved lead, and NSF/ANSI 42 Class I for particulate reduction. Verify that both claims apply to the exact model you are considering.
The EPA’s lead-filter tool describes point-of-use and pitcher products evaluated to reduce lead to 5 parts per billion or less and to meet particulate-reduction criteria under those standards. That describes the tool’s criteria; it does not mean every product bearing one of those standard numbers has the same tested outcome. Check the tool and the product’s listing: EPA Consumer Tool for Identifying Point-of-Use and Pitcher Filters Certified to Reduce Lead.

What to look for if you want a filter for PFAS
The EPA advises looking for NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58 with a specific PFAS-reduction claim, then verifying the model and claim in the certifier’s directory. A standard number without the PFAS claim is not enough. The EPA guidance updated August 3, 2026, says the certifications it describes focus on PFOA and PFOS and do not yet indicate reduction down to levels in the EPA’s newer drinking-water standard. Because certification claims and standards can change, check the current listing when choosing a model. See EPA guidance on reducing PFAS in drinking water with a home filter.
Account for upkeep before you buy
Filters, membranes, and lamps need maintenance or replacement according to their model instructions. A neglected system may lose effectiveness or worsen water quality; the EPA’s WaterSense guide states that all treatment systems require ongoing maintenance to remain effective and efficient.
- Check the recommended replacement interval and the cost and availability of compatible cartridges, membranes, or lamps.
- Confirm whether your household can follow the maintenance schedule and whether the system has an accessible way to track it.
- For RO, include reject-water use in the operating trade-off.
- For distillation, consider its energy use and care of the cooling components.
- For a whole-house system, factor in installation, plumbing changes, and professional maintenance where needed.
As the EPA puts it, “Choose one that everyone in your home can use and take care of easily.”
Quick Recap
