There is no single best kitchen chair for every older adult. Look for a stable, fixed-leg chair with a supportive back, a firm but comfortable seat and sturdy armrests that are easy to push from. The seat should fit the person, allow comfortable feet-on-floor contact and work with the kitchen table. If balance or transfers are difficult, individual advice from an occupational therapist can help identify suitable seating.
How to check whether a chair fits
Try the chair with the person who will use it, ideally at the kitchen table. A chair that is too low, too soft, too deep or too wide can make sitting and standing harder. Fit is individual; there is no universal seat height or set of dimensions for every older adult.
- Seat height: Choose a height as high as practical while allowing both feet to rest comfortably on the floor. A comfortable knee bend near a right angle is a useful fitting cue, not a medical rule for everyone. Ontario Health atHome offers this height guidance at its falls-prevention page; the Hong Kong Elderly Health Service gives similar advice in its suitable-chair guide.
- Seat surface: Aim for a supportive surface that is not excessively soft or slippery. Either can make transferring more difficult, according to the Hong Kong guide.
- Width and depth: The seat should support the person without squeezing. They should be able to sit back, keep their feet grounded and use the armrests effectively. The Hong Kong guide suggests about one inch of space on either side when seated centrally; treat that as its guidance, not a universal measurement.
- Back support: Choose a supportive back that allows a comfortable seated posture. The Hong Kong guide describes an ideal backrest-to-seat angle of 100 degrees, but this should not be treated as a one-size-fits-all requirement.
Choose a stable base and usable armrests
For someone who needs a steady surface to push from, prioritize fixed, stable legs and sturdy armrests. The arms should be close enough and at a usable height to help with sitting down and rising, without getting in the way of the table.
Avoid castors or wheels, swivel and rocking mechanisms when stability during transfers is a concern. These designs can move while someone is pushing up. Folding chairs may also tip, and a chair without arms can be harder to rise from, according to the Hong Kong Elderly Health Service guide. These are practical selection cautions, not evidence that a particular chair prevents falls.

Check the chair at the kitchen table
A chair that fits the person may still be awkward in the room. Check that it can be pulled close enough to the table for a comfortable position, and that the arms and back do not prevent it from fitting beneath or around the table. The person should not have to lean or reach awkwardly to eat. Victoria’s Department of Health recommends stable, comfortable dining chairs with good armrests that fit under the table in its dementia-friendly dining guidance.
Also consider everyday household needs such as cleaning, moving the chair and available space. The official guidance cited here does not compare upholstery materials or establish which is most durable, so treat those as practical considerations rather than proven performance differences.

Compare chairs before buying
- Have the person sit in the chair and check that both feet rest comfortably on the floor.
- Check that the seat supports the person without feeling too soft, slippery, narrow or deep.
- Ask the person to use the armrests when sitting down and standing, if they can do so safely. Confirm that the arms feel sturdy and are within comfortable reach.
- Check that the chair stays steady during those movements and that its legs do not slide or roll.
- Try the chair at the actual table. Confirm that the person can get close enough and that the chair fits without obstructing their posture or access.
- Consider whether the chair is practical to clean and move in the room, without trading away stability or a good fit.
When to seek individualized advice
If the person has difficulty getting up, maintaining balance or finding a comfortable seated position, an occupational therapist can help assess what seating may suit their needs. The Hong Kong Elderly Health Service advises consulting an occupational therapist before purchasing assistive devices. NIH fall-prevention guidance also notes that an occupational therapist, physical therapist or nurse may assess home safety after a fall. This is not a requirement for every chair purchase, but it is a reasonable next step when ordinary furniture choices are not working.
NIH also advises preparing food while seated to reduce fatigue or loss of balance. That advice places the chair within the broader kitchen setup; it does not establish that a particular chair reduces an individual’s fall risk. The chair guidance cited here does not provide controlled comparisons showing that a specific kitchen chair prevents falls.
