For cold drinks, compare the whole setup—cup, lid, seal, straw, insulation, cleaning and replacement parts. Don’t assume a straw lid is leakproof, or that every component is made from the same material.
How to choose a reusable cup with a lid and straw
Start with the drink and temperature
Straw lids are a natural fit for iced coffee, cold brew, smoothies and water. Hot-liquid guidance varies by product, so check the manufacturer’s directions for the exact model. KeepCup warns that drinking hot liquid through a straw can increase burn risk because the liquid bypasses the cooling and mixing that happens when sipping from the cup edge (KeepCup Cold Cup).
Check the materials in every part
A stainless-steel cup may still have a plastic lid and straws; a glass cup may use silicone seals. If material choice matters to you, check the body, lid, gasket and straw separately. KeepCup offers different cold-cup designs in tempered glass, insulated steel, double-wall glass and recycled Tritan, with replaceable lids and straws. S’well Glass+ combines borosilicate glass, a stainless-steel sleeve and lid, and silicone straw and gasket. Simple Modern Voyager has a vacuum-insulated steel body but a BPA-free plastic lid and straws (KeepCup; S’well; Simple Modern).
Match the seal to how you travel
“Splash-proof,” “spillproof” and “leakproof” are not interchangeable. A cup that is fine upright in a car cupholder may not be safe to toss sideways into a bag. Klean Kanteen describes its children’s cup as splash-proof and explicitly says it is not leakproof. S’well calls the Glass+ straw cap leakproof, while KeepCup describes the Thermal cold cup lid as spillproof. These are manufacturer descriptions, not results from an independent comparison (Klean Kanteen; S’well; KeepCup).

Think about cleaning and replacement parts
Straws and small seals need regular cleaning. Look for care instructions that explain whether parts come apart and how to reach the straw’s interior and gasket. Replacement parts can also help keep a usable cup in service rather than replacing the whole system when one component wears out. The manufacturers’ stated care differs: Klean Kanteen lists its kids’ cup as dishwasher-safe; S’well says Glass+ is dishwasher-safe and instructs users to remove the straw and gasket for deeper cleaning; Simple Modern says Voyager’s cup, lid and straws are top-rack dishwasher-safe and that the lid should be washed open (Klean Kanteen; S’well; Simple Modern).

What the environmental figures do—and don’t—show
Reusable drinkware is not automatically lower-impact in every situation: material production, washing, product life and how often you actually reuse it all matter. KeepCup’s travel-mug page summarizes its commissioned, peer-reviewed 2018 life-cycle analysis as finding that a tempered-glass cup needed 24 uses and an insulated-steel cup 66 uses to beat the impact of 1,000 disposable cups. Those are KeepCup’s summaries of its own commissioned analysis, not universal break-even points for every reusable cup. KeepCup’s current cold-cup page also says its plastic range uses about as much plastic as 20 disposable cups and lids; that, too, is a company-reported comparison (KeepCup Cold Cup). Consider such figures alongside the product’s expected lifespan and your own reuse habits, rather than using them as a blanket ranking of materials.

Choose by your travel pattern
- For a child’s cup used upright: Klean Kanteen’s 10 oz model has a splash-proof lid and cupholder fit, but its maker says it is not leakproof and recommends it for ages 3 and up.
- For a bag, where leaks matter: Prefer a model whose manufacturer specifically describes the relevant lid as leakproof, and follow its use instructions. S’well makes that claim for Glass+; it does not eliminate the cup’s glass-breakage risk.
- For cupholder use and insulation: Simple Modern describes Voyager as cupholder-friendly and insulated, but its lid and straws are BPA-free plastic, and current stock should be checked.
- For a choice of body materials and replaceable parts: Compare the specific KeepCup Cold Cup models; their bodies and insulation differ.
- For disposable-lid compatibility: ECOtanka’s To Go Cup is designed for common 90 mm disposable lids, but verify the exact lid and straw arrangement you intend to use.
Before buying
- Confirm the exact model, capacity, included lid and straw, current availability, and replacement-part options.
- Read the care instructions for the body, lid, straw and gasket; dishwasher-safe does not necessarily mean every component can be washed the same way.
- Decide whether the cup must stay upright or travel sideways, and choose a seal claim that matches that use.
- For glass designs, account for breakage risk even when a protective sleeve is included.
- For any straw lid, follow the manufacturer’s hot-liquid guidance rather than assuming it is suitable for hot drinks.
