What humidity should you aim for?
Start with the guitar makerโs care guidance. Taylor recommends 45โ55% RH, and C. F. Martin & Co. recommends the same range; Martin also gives a temperature range of 72โ77ยฐF (22โ25ยฐC). See Taylorโs guitar humidifier guidance and Martinโs care FAQ. If your instrumentโs maker gives different instructions, follow those.
Relative humidity is a measurement, not a setting to guess by comfort. A room humidifierโs built-in control, if it has one, does not tell you what the guitar experiences unless you check the environment with a hygrometer.
How to choose a room humidifier
Match capacity to the room
Use the roomโs size or volume and the humidifierโs stated coverage or capacity as your first filter. Taylorโs Fall 2011 Wood & Steel guidance says a unit that is too small may not maintain the intended RH in a larger room. That is a general sizing principle, not a comparison of current models. Choose a unit rated for the space rather than assuming any compact device will be sufficient.

Consider how the guitar is stored
A room unit is useful when the guitar is often left out and you want to manage the surrounding room. If the instrument is normally stored in a closed case, maintaining humidity in that smaller enclosed space can be easier than controlling an entire room. Martin recognizes both room and case humidifiers as options; Taylor also recommends the enclosed case as an easier environment to manage when the room is not humidity-controlled.
Compare only what you can verify
For a practical comparison, check room capacity, whether you can monitor RH with a separate meter, how the guitar is stored, and whether the unit can be placed away from the instrument. The cited guidance does not establish comparable noise levels, tank sizes, runtimes, cleaning demands, humidistat accuracy, or preferred humidifier technology, so those details need to come from each modelโs current specifications rather than assumptions.

Where to place the unit and hygrometer
Do not put a room humidifier directly under a hanging guitar or right beside a guitar on a stand. Taylor cautions that the air immediately around a unit can become over-humidified, even if the rest of the room is not at the same level. Its room-sizing and placement advice appeared in Wood & Steel in Fall 2011.
- Place the humidifier away from the instrument, avoiding a direct stream of humid air onto the guitar.
- Set a digital hygrometer near where the guitar is kept so the reading reflects its surroundings as closely as practical.
- Check readings over time and adjust humidification according to the measured RH and the makerโs guidance; do not keep adding moisture without checking.
Taylorโs own hygrometer product listing specifies a 10โ95% RH measurement range, a temperature range of โ40ยฐF to 158ยฐF (โ40ยฐC to 70ยฐC), and stated accuracy within 5%. These are specifications for that product, not a guarantee for every hygrometer. Consult the Taylor Hygrometer product page for those figures.

When a guitar-case humidifier may make more sense
If you put the guitar away in a closed case between playing sessions, a case humidifier can target the smaller space around the instrument rather than humidifying the whole room. Taylor names the DโAddario Two-Way Humidification System, Oasis OH-1, and MusicNomad Case Humitar as guitar-specific case options. Taylor describes the DโAddario packets as regulating toward 45โ50% RH and as able to release or absorb moisture; that is the product description, not an independent performance test.
Taylor cautions against a humidifier that seals the soundhole unless a secondary humidifier also addresses the neck area. Whichever case system you use, monitor the actual RH rather than assuming the product alone guarantees the desired conditions. See Taylorโs guidance on guitar humidifiers.

Why both dry air and excess moisture matter
Prolonged conditions outside a guitar makerโs recommended range can damage an instrument. Taylor lists dry-condition problems such as buzzing or poor action, protruding fret ends, cracks, a sinking top, and a lifting bridge. Martin warns that dry conditions in particular can contribute to cracking, warping, or other damage.
More humidity is not automatically safer. Taylor warns that prolonged high humidity can swell the body, weaken glue joints, lift the finish, and affect neck angle. These symptoms are not a diagnosis: for example, high action can have causes other than excess humidity. If you notice a change in playability or visible damage, have a qualified guitar repair technician assess the instrument instead of trying to correct it by feel alone.
