Choose by the residue you need to remove, the shower surface, and the product’s label directions. For hard-water deposits and soap scum, CLR PRO Restroom Cleaner lists both among its uses; for routine daily upkeep, Clorox Plus Tilex Daily Shower Cleaner is described by its manufacturer as helping prevent buildup when used regularly.
Choose a cleaner by the job
Soap scum and hard-water deposits are different cleaning challenges, and a product’s stated uses matter more than a broad “bathroom cleaner” label. EPA explains that surfactants can reduce surface tension, solvents can dissolve or suspend materials, and chelating agents can address water-hardness problems. These ingredient functions help explain why formulas vary; they do not establish which product performs best. See the EPA Safer Choice Standard and Criteria.
- Soap scum and mineral deposits: CLR PRO Restroom Cleaner says it removes soap scum, calcium, lime, and hard-water deposits. CLR Brilliant Bath Free & Clear also lists soap scum and mineral deposits among its targets.
- Soap-scum buildup: Seventh Generation Tub & Tile Cleaner describes use for soap-scum buildup.
- Routine prevention: Clorox says daily use of Plus Tilex Daily Shower Cleaner Spray helps prevent soap-scum and hard-water buildup. That is a maintenance claim, not a promise that it replaces a deep clean.
These are manufacturer descriptions, not results from independent head-to-head testing. None supports an objective overall ranking.
Compare the non-bleach options and their cautions

Check surface compatibility before cleaning
Confirm that the exact product is listed as suitable for your shower or tub material, and follow the current package directions. Surface names can be easy to overlook: a cleaner suitable for tile or grout in general may still exclude a particular finish or color.

For CLR PRO, the manufacturer directs users to spot test, wipe the product on, and promptly rinse thoroughly with clean cold water. Follow the directions on the package you have, since formulas and instructions may change.
Consider Safer Choice certification in context
EPA’s Safer Choice Standard, identified on the agency page as the August 2024 standard, evaluates ingredients against criteria within functional classes and includes other program requirements. Seventh Generation displays the certification on its cited Tub & Tile Cleaner page, and CLR identifies CLR PRO Restroom Cleaner as part of the program. Certification can be one factor in choosing a product; it does not mean a cleaner is best for every surface or buildup, and it is not a comparative performance score.

Never mix shower cleaners
Use one cleaner at a time and follow its label. CLR Brilliant Bath explicitly warns against mixing with bleach or other cleaners. Do not combine cleaning products, even when both are intended for bathrooms.
