The right choice depends on your workpiece, required travel, vise footprint, drill-press clearance and a secure way to fasten the vise to the table—not on jaw width alone.
The models below are compared using published specifications and manufacturer or catalog descriptions. There is no controlled comparative testing here to establish a single best-performing vise.
What to compare before choosing a cross-slide vise
- Workpiece capacity: Compare jaw width, maximum opening and jaw depth. These measurements describe different things; a wide jaw does not necessarily open far enough for your stock.
- Travel for the hole pattern: Check the X- and Y-axis travel against the distances between the holes you need to drill. Greater travel can mean a larger vise and base.
- Fit on the drill-press table: Measure the base, identify the mounting slots or lugs, and confirm that suitable fasteners can reach the table. Then check the remaining spindle-to-table height with the vise and workpiece in place. A general compatibility claim does not guarantee fit on every press.
- Jaw features: V-grooves can help support round stock vertically or horizontally. Some Wilton CS models list separate smooth replacement inserts; confirm compatibility using the exact model and part number.
- Safe setup: Plan to secure both the workpiece in the vise and the vise to the drill-press table. Follow the instructions for the specific press and vise.

WEN describes the CV414 as compatible with the majority of drill-press tables, but its own mounting and clearance still need to be checked against your press. The handwheel increments and travel-per-turn figures are published dial specifications, not demonstrated real-world positioning tolerances.

Which option may fit your work?
For a compact setup with published two-axis travel: WEN CV414
The CV414 combines 5.8 inches of X travel and 6 inches of Y travel with jaws 4.25 inches wide and an opening of up to 4.125 inches. Its fixed jaw has a V-shaped groove, and the page specifies five 1/2-inch mounting brackets. Consider it only if its base, mounting arrangement and installed height suit your press.
For a choice of jaw sizes: Wilton CS series
The CS3 through CS8 range from 3- to 8-inch jaws and, in the catalog, from 4-9/10 to 7-9/10 inches of travel on each axis depending on model. The catalog also lists hardened V-grooved jaws and smooth replacement inserts with model-specific part numbers. Match the selected size to the workpiece and table rather than assuming the largest vise is the most suitable.
Rank #2
- Non-Slip & Stable: Designed with anti-slip textured jaws, this cross slide vise delivers up to 7KN of clamping force to hold workpieces securely. It effectively resists slipping, ensuring steady work for drilling, engraving, grinding, and more
- Durable Construction: Crafted from quality cast iron with high hardness, this cross slide drill press vise is impact-resistant and built to last. Its solid structure helps it withstand high-strength use over time
- Precise Positioning: Designed for X/Y axis movement, this drill press vise creates greater operating space and flexibility. With a 5.5 in (140 mm) X-axis movement and 3.9 in (99 mm) Y-axis movement, it ensures accurate workpiece positioning in tasks
- Dual-Handle Control: The X Y axis drill press vise features dual handles for easy front-to-back & left-to-right adjustment. This design allows precise multi-angle clamping of workpieces, enabling a simple, efficient operation
- Wide Compatibility: This bench vise is ideal for milling machines, drilling machines, shaping machines, and surface grinders. With strong versatility, it meets diverse processing needs and serves as a reliable assistant for you
For documented construction and setup guidance: Palmgren Cross Vise
Palmgren’s manual describes fine-grain cast-iron construction, replaceable steel jaw plates and precision-cut Acme feed screws. It specifies base/bed parallelism of 0.001 inch; that is a manufacturer’s specification, not an independently verified accuracy result. The manual calls for mounting at two or more locations, securely clamping the work, avoiding overtightening, and not pounding or hammering on the workpiece.
Mount and use the vise safely
A drill bit can catch stock that is held by hand and spin it out of control. OSHA’s drill-press eTool identifies hand-holding stock as a common hazard and recommends securing material to the drill-press bed. OSHA’s 2021 Drill Press Trainer Script states: “Work pieces must always be clamped with a vise or work holding equipment which then needs to be clamped to the table.”

- 3.25 by 1.25 in. jaws open up to 3.25 in. wide
- Constructed of industrial-strength powder-coated cast iron
- Hand wheels feature machine-marked 0.1 mm increments for maximum precision
- Jaws travel 5.8 in. left and right and 6 in. front and back
- Universal design compatible with the majority of drill presses on the market (see images for base dimensions)
- Clamp the workpiece in the vise, and secure the vise to the drill-press table using a mounting arrangement suited to both.
- Do not hold the workpiece by hand while drilling. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety also recommends a clamp or drill vise to prevent work from spinning.
- Follow the press and vise manuals. Palmgren’s manual specifically advises against overtightening and against pounding or hammering on the workpiece.
- Reduce drilling pressure as the bit breaks through the workpiece, as advised by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.
See the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety’s drill-press safety guidance for its recommendations on clamping and breakthrough.

The cited product material describes drilling and X/Y positioning, but does not establish that these vises are approved for milling or lateral cutting loads. Treat them as drilling and positioning vises unless the relevant vise and machine manufacturers explicitly document another operation.
