A shower chair is a practical aid after knee replacement, but the right choice depends on your bathroom and how you move. For a walk-in shower, look for a stable chair that fits the available space; for a bathtub, consider whether a tub-transfer bench would make getting in and out safer. Follow your surgical team’s instructions for shower timing, transfers, and incision care.
Which shower chair or bench suits your bathroom?
Hospital guidance supports sitting while bathing after knee replacement: Johns Hopkins Bayview advises using a shower stool or chair, and Massachusetts General Hospital recommends a stable chair in both stall and tub showers. These sources do not identify one universally best model. Choose based on the bathing area, transfer needs, and safe fit.
| Bathroom setup | Option to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Walk-in or stall shower | A stable shower chair or stool | Measure the shower footprint and make sure the chair leaves enough room to enter, sit, and exit safely. Mass General recommends a stable chair for a stall shower. |
| Bathtub with shower | A chair inside the tub, or a tub-transfer bench spanning the tub edge | If stepping over the tub side is difficult, a bench may support a seated transfer. Confirm the chosen aid fits the tub and does not obstruct the transfer. |
University of Utah Health describes seated transfers using a chair or tub-transfer bench where possible; Mass General also advises a stable chair in a tub shower. The layout and your mobility determine which setup is suitable.
Chair details to verify
- Check the product’s dimensions against the actual shower or tub, including space needed to move safely.
- Look for stable placement and rubber feet or tips. MedlinePlus recommends rubber tips to help prevent slipping.
- For a chair used inside a bathtub, MedlinePlus advises choosing a seat without arms; arms may interfere with fitting in the tub.
- Check the product listing for its applicable weight capacity and other specifications. General medical guidance does not establish the capacity or fit of a particular product.
- Consider whether the user can sit, stand, and move their legs over a threshold safely, and whether a caregiver or therapist’s assistance is needed.
These are selection criteria, not a claim that one chair design is safest for everyone.

How to reduce hazards around the shower
Make the route to and from the bathing area as predictable as possible. Johns Hopkins lists nonslip bath mats and grab bars among bathroom safety aids after total knee replacement. Mass General advises placing a non-skid mat outside the shower and having someone help the first time you shower at home.
- Keep the floor outside the shower dry and use a nonskid mat where appropriate.
- Place soap and shampoo within reach so you do not need to stand, twist, or reach awkwardly.
- Consider grab bars and a handheld shower head if they suit the bathroom and your care team’s advice. University of Utah Health lists these among equipment that may help.
- Use the walking aid and transfer method prescribed by your therapist or discharge instructions.
Alberta Health Services describes a seated shower-entry sequence: approach with the walking aid, turn with your back toward the stall, reach for the seat while retaining support, sit, then bring your legs over the threshold. This is guidance for that sequence, not a substitute for your own therapist’s transfer instructions.

When can you shower after knee replacement?
There is no universal start date established by the cited guidance. Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust says showering in a cubicle is appropriate when a person feels confident stepping in safely and does not need a mobility aid to maintain standing balance; its instructions also address wound dressings. MedlinePlus advises showering only as the surgeon directs and includes wound-care cautions.
Follow your surgeon’s specific instructions for shower timing, dressing, and incision care. The advice can depend on your wound and dressing, and a general shower-chair recommendation does not determine when your incision may get wet.
