For cleaning a glass bong with isopropyl alcohol, choose coarse-grain salt, such as coarse kosher salt or coarse sea salt. The grains provide abrasion while the alcohol loosens resin. Available guides do not establish that one coarse salt is better than another.
Why coarse salt is used with alcohol
Salt and isopropyl alcohol do different jobs in the traditional cleaning method: alcohol helps loosen resin, while undissolved salt grains provide physical abrasion as the mixture moves around the glass. This is practical guide advice, not a laboratory comparison of cleaning performance. Coarse kosher salt and coarse sea salt are common examples; there is no evidence here to rank them against each other.
What supplies you need
- Coarse salt
- Isopropyl alcohol, used according to its label
- A pipe cleaner or suitably sized brush for narrow areas
- Optional rubber stoppers to seal openings while shaking
Some guides also mention Epsom salt or commercial cleaners as alternatives. No universal performance ranking is established, so consider whether the grains remain undissolved in the cleaning liquid, how much scrubbing the piece needs, and whether the product is compatible with its materials. A cleaner should not be assumed safer or more effective simply because it is specialty-made.
How to clean a glass bong with salt and alcohol
- Empty and rinse the piece. Remove loose residue and water, then disassemble removable parts such as the bowl and downstem.
- Add the cleaning mixture. Put coarse salt and enough isopropyl alcohol into the bong to contact the dirty surfaces. Add salt and alcohol to removable glass parts separately as needed.
- Seal and shake carefully. Secure the openings with suitable stoppers or your hands, then move the mixture around the glass. One Azarius guide gives 2–3 tablespoons of salt and 2–5 minutes of shaking as an example, not a universal requirement; guides differ on amounts and timing. See Azarius’s step-by-step guide.
- Brush stubborn or narrow areas. Use a pipe cleaner or brush where residue remains. Avoid metal tools, which can scratch or chip glass, as One Green Leaf’s guide cautions.
- Rinse every part thoroughly. Wash away the salt and alcohol mixture, then let the pieces dry before reassembling. Azarius warns that inhaling isopropyl vapour through a poorly rinsed piece can irritate the respiratory tract.
Safety and material compatibility
Do not heat isopropyl alcohol: it is flammable, and its vapour can irritate. Keep the cleaning process away from ignition sources and follow the alcohol product’s label.

The salt-and-alcohol method described here is for glass. Do not assume it is suitable for acrylic, coated, decorated, or mixed-material pieces; check the maker’s care directions first. The CannaConnection guide likewise distinguishes glass from acrylic or decorated pieces.
