A hex shank describes the bit’s attachment shape; it does not, by itself, mean the bit is rated for an impact driver. Check the bit’s stated impact rating, the chuck or collet fit, and the bit’s material application before buying.
What a hex shank tells you—and what it doesn’t
A hex shank has flat sides that help it seat in compatible chucks and quick-change holders. It describes how the bit attaches, not what materials it can cut or whether it can withstand an impact driver’s repeated rotational blows. A bit with a hex shank is not automatically impact rated.
Manufacturers offer hex-shank bits for different jobs, including metal drilling, multi-material drilling, masonry drilling, and step drilling. Choose by the bit’s stated application and rating rather than by shank shape or a broad “all-purpose” label.
Will a hex shank bit fit your drill or driver?
Fit depends on the exact bit profile and the tool’s chuck or collet. Bosch explains that round or cylindrical shanks fit almost all drills and impact drills, while hexagonal shanks can fit three-jaw chucks. Bosch’s hex-shank design adds a groove and is specified for three-jaw, SDS Quick, and hex-shank chucks. That does not make every hex profile or chuck interchangeable; check both products’ specifications and your tool manual. Bosch’s drill bit guide describes the distinctions.
#1 Best Overall
- Titanium nitride (TiN) coating lasts 2.5x longer than non-coated bits
- 135 degree split point geometry for faster starts and reduced walking
- Impact rated: For use in 1/4 inches hex impact drivers
- For drilling holes in ferrous metal, wood, plastic, non-ferrous metal, cast iron and stainless steel
For a drill with a three-jaw chuck
A three-jaw chuck can grip many round-shank bits and compatible hex-shank bits. Confirm the bit’s shank size and profile against the chuck’s capacity and the tool manufacturer’s instructions.
For an impact driver with a quick-change collet
Many impact drivers use a 1/4-inch hex quick-change collet. Use a bit whose shank is specified to fit that holder, and verify that the bit is also rated for impact-driver use. Hex fit alone confirms neither rating nor cutting suitability.

Can you use an impact driver for drilling?
Yes, with a bit intended for impact-driver use and a compatible holder. DEWALT’s support response says an impact driver can drill with impact-ready bits; it also names the DW0521 as an option for converting a 1/4-inch hex chuck to a three-jaw 3/8-inch drill chuck. The adapter provides a different bit-holding interface—it does not improve cutting performance or make an unrated bit impact ready. Verify fit for the specific tool, adapter, and bit. DEWALT’s support article is dated February 14, 2023.
DEWALT notes that an impact driver’s speed range may be higher than a drill’s, depending on the model; its article gives a typical maximum of 2,400–2,800 rpm for impact drivers. Treat that as the range DEWALT cites, not a specification for every driver. Follow your tool manual, choose the appropriate speed or setting where available, and avoid forcing the bit if it binds or overheats.

- HSS Titanium Coating - Classic HSS construction with titanium coating for capability and durability. The cutting edge is hardened and honed for sharpness, chatter-free design with staggered cutting teeth ensure the precise countersinking and hole smooth clean.
- Flutes Form - 2 flutes form helps clear chips and debris away from the bit, decreasing friction and heat for a faster, cooler drilling process.
- Quick Change - 1/4 inch hex shank fits into all power tools more easily and securely, specially for locking into quick change chuck.
- Meet Your Demands - Great drill bits set for metal/wood/plastic countersink. Suitable for Home DIY, and General Building/Engineering Use.
- Organized Holder - A drill bits holder with size index is included in the set for easy storage and organizing. The drill bits set fits the majority of brands currently on the market.
Choose the bit by material and hole type
Start with the material and the hole you need. A metal-drilling bit, a carbide-head multi-material bit, a masonry bit, and a step bit are different designs for different tasks; none is a universal choice just because it has a hex shank.
Metal and general rotary drilling
Bosch Professional lists Impact Tough Black Oxide Drill Bits for rotary drills and drivers as well as impact drill/drivers, with multiple diameters and lengths. Check the exact bit’s stated applications and impact suitability before use. See Bosch’s Impact Tough Black Oxide Drill Bits.

- Sizes and Package - Drill bit sizes include: 1/16"x3, 5/64"x2, 3/32"x2, 7/64", 1/8“x2, 9/64", 5/32", 11/64", 3/16"x2, 13/64", 7/32", 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 7/16" 1/2". 22 PCS drill bit set in a double blister pack with easy opening design.
- Sharp Cutting Edge - HIGHFIRE hex shank drill bit set has accurate tip geometry which ensures cutting edge sharp and strong. 135 degrees split point tip provides a no-walking drilling start on working surface.
- Hex Shank Bits- Hex shank drill bits fit in quick-change impact drivers. Hex shank eliminates shank spinning in chuck when using pressure.
- Solid Connection and Tapered Web - The strong connection of drill bits and shank transits high torque from drills to the tip of the drill bit without breakage. It also decreases radial runout to make the hole rounder. HIGHFIRE hex shank drill bits with tapered web design increases strength and reduces breakage.
- Twist Flute and Titanium Coating - With optimized flute form, HIGHFIRE drill bit decreases friction and heat easily to ensure fast drilling and a long working life. 135-degree twist flute helps to remove chips quickly. TiN coating extends drill bits life 3 times longer.
Several materials
Carbide-head multi-material bits may suit varied jobs when the specific product lists the materials involved. Bosch describes its Impact MultiConstruction Drill Bits for materials including masonry, plastic, wood, steel, and tile, and says they can be used in impactors and hammer drill/drivers. Follow the application guidance for the exact bit rather than assuming every bit in a category handles every material. See Bosch’s Impact MultiConstruction Drill Bits.
Milwaukee also describes SHOCKWAVE Impact Duty multi-material drill bits for a range of materials and tools, with available diameters up to 1/2 inch. That is the stated upper diameter for this product line, not a general limit for multi-material bits. See Milwaukee’s SHOCKWAVE drill bits.

Masonry
For masonry, choose a masonry-specific bit and verify that its product listing permits use with your tool. Bosch’s Canadian listing describes its Hex Shank Hammer Drill Bits as carbide-tipped masonry bits optimized for masonry and usable in impact drivers and hammer drill/drivers. It lists common diameters, six-inch versions, and a seven-piece set; check the Canadian listing and local specifications for availability. This does not establish that an impact driver can replace a rotary hammer or that the bit is suitable for every masonry task. See Bosch’s Canadian hex-shank masonry bit listing.
Step drilling
A step bit makes holes at progressively larger diameters in suitable sheet materials. Milwaukee describes its SHOCKWAVE step bits as impact-duty products for impact drivers and drills, with a 1/4-inch hex shank. Confirm the material range and diameter steps for the individual bit. See Milwaukee’s SHOCKWAVE step bits.
Quick Recap
How to compare bits or sets before buying
- Tool fit: Match the shank to the tool’s 1/4-inch hex collet, three-jaw chuck, SDS Quick chuck, or other specified holder. Check the actual bit and tool specifications.
- Impact rating: If using an impact driver, look for the manufacturer’s explicit impact-ready or impact-duty designation. Do not infer it from a hex shank.
- Material and design: Choose a metal, multi-material, masonry, or step bit according to the product’s stated application.
- Diameter and length: Match the diameter to the hole and check working length as well as overall length, especially when access is limited or the hole must be deep.
- Set contents: Compare the included sizes and types with the work you expect to do. A larger set is not better if it lacks the sizes or bit designs you need.
- Exact model and region: Product names and available configurations vary. Check the specific model listing in your region rather than assuming every size or set is available locally.
A practical selection sequence
- Identify the tool holder. Check the manual or tool specifications for the chuck or collet type and size.
- Choose the bit design for the material and hole. Select a product whose stated application covers the job.
- Verify impact suitability. For impact-driver use, confirm that the manufacturer rates that exact bit for impact duty.
- Match the dimensions. Choose the required diameter and enough working length for the hole and access.
- Check the exact listing. Confirm set contents, model details, regional availability, and the tool’s operating guidance before use.
