For most shower joints, the best choice is a sanitary silicone sealant labeled for bathroom or shower use, with mold-inhibiting additives and compatibility with both surfaces being joined. There is no single product proven best for every shower: materials, cure chemistry, and water-exposure instructions vary. Natural stone needs special care—choose a sealant specifically formulated not to stain it.
What to look for in a shower sealant
Start with the product label and technical data sheet, not just the word “silicone.” Dedicated sanitary products are made for bathroom joints and shower screens, but their permitted uses differ. For example, Dow describes its DOWSIL Sanitary Sealant as a neutral-cure silicone for bathrooms and ceramic tile with mold and mildew resistance. That is a manufacturer description, not an independent comparative test.
- Sanitary or bathroom designation: Choose a product explicitly intended for sanitary joints, bathrooms, or showers.
- Compatibility: Check every material the bead will touch, including the tray or bath, tile, screen frame, and any plastic, metal, or stone.
- Mold resistance: Look for mold-resistant wording or mold-inhibiting additives. These are intended to inhibit growth on the sealant; they do not make the entire shower mold-proof.
- Application and water exposure: Follow the exact product’s working-time, application, and water-exposure directions. These are not interchangeable across brands or formulations.
Match the sealant to the surfaces
A shower joint can span two different materials, so confirm that the chosen product is suitable for both. A sealant listed for tile and glass may still exclude a particular plastic, metal, or stone. Dow’s DOWSIL 785N Neutral Sanitary Silicone lists showers, tiles, metals, glass, porcelain, plastics, and porous or non-porous surfaces among its uses. By contrast, the Hong Kong page for SikaSeal Kitchen and Bathroom lists shower screens and common substrates but excludes natural stone and some other materials. Read the local technical sheet for the specific formulation you plan to use.
Natural stone
Marble and other porous natural stone can be stained by a general-purpose sanitary silicone. Use a product explicitly described as non-staining and suitable for natural stone. Bostik S960 Silicone Non-Staining is described by Bostik as a neutral-cure sealant for natural stone, bathrooms, and showers, with mold resistance. Ceresit CS 42 Marble Joint Silicone is described for natural-stone joints, including sanitary applications. Check the local version’s data sheet and confirm suitability for the exact stone.

Metal and plastic
Cure chemistry can affect compatibility. Neutral-cure products are offered for a range of materials, including some metals and plastics, while acid-cure products may have different restrictions. Do not infer that a product is suitable for every surface merely because it says “bathroom” or “shower.” Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for each substrate.

Product properties and availability can vary by region and formulation. The listed working time and early water-resistance period are product-specific figures reported by manufacturers, not general rules for silicone sealant.
Prepare the joint before applying new silicone
New sealant needs clean, sound surfaces to adhere properly. Ceresit’s silicone-removal guidance says joint faces should be dry, sound, and clean, with oil, grease, and old sealant removed. It says cured sealant can be scraped away or treated with a silicone-removal product. Bostik also emphasizes preparation and matching the formulation to the substrate in its S960 product information.

- Keep the joint out of water for the period and under the conditions specified by that product’s current label or technical data sheet.
Working time is not cure time
Working time is the period available to apply or tool a bead; it does not tell you when the sealant is ready for water. Dow’s product page reports a 10-minute working time for DOWSIL 680. Separately, Dow reports early water resistance of about two hours for DOWSIL 785N. Neither figure should be applied to another product or treated as a universal shower-reuse schedule.
Use the chosen sealant’s current local instructions for water exposure, application conditions, joint geometry, ventilation, and cleanup. The manufacturers’ product information does not establish one application method or cure schedule that fits every shower.
