For leaves and other visible debris floating on the water, a handheld mesh hot tub skimmer net is the practical choice. It clears the surface; it does not replace the spa’s filtration system or a vacuum for dirt that has settled on the bottom. “Skimmer” can also mean a built-in basket or weir, which is a model-specific spa component rather than a handheld net.
Choose a skimmer by where the debris is
Floating leaves and larger debris: use a mesh net
Pass a handheld mesh net over the water to collect visible floating debris. Bestway includes a skimmer net in its basic inflatable hot tub cleaning guidance and distinguishes surface skimming from vacuuming dirt on the bottom.
Dirt on the floor: use a bottom-cleaning method
A surface net is not designed to remove debris that has settled. Bestway recommends vacuuming for dirt on the bottom; follow your spa’s instructions and use a method suitable for its surface and equipment.
Standalone net or bundled maintenance kit?
A standalone mesh net is suited to the specific task of gathering floating debris. If you also need tools for other basic cleaning jobs, Intex’s PureSpa maintenance kit includes a mesh skimmer net, a curved brush for inner walls, and a scrubber pad. The product information describes what is included; it does not establish that the bundled net cleans better than a standalone net.

When “skimmer” means a built-in spa component
Some spas have an installed basket, floating weir, or filter-skimmer assembly as part of their water intake and filtration arrangement. These parts are not interchangeable with handheld surface nets, and designs vary. CMP documents multiple spa skimmer and filter configurations.
For replacement or removal, identify the spa’s make and model and check the manufacturer’s compatibility information and manual. Canadian Spa Company’s floating-weir assembly instructions are for specified Yukon and pre-2014 models, not a universal procedure.

Remove and clean built-in parts according to your spa manual
Shutdown procedures differ by model. Canadian Spa Company says to power off the spa before removing the filter or basket in its floating-weir guide. By contrast, Hydropool’s 2021 Serenity manual describes using HOLD/STANDBY mode, removing and clearing the basket, reinstalling it, and checking that water flows over the basket after restarting. See the Hydropool Serenity manual for that model’s procedure. Do not apply either process to a different spa unless its own manual directs you to do so.
Consider a robotic cleaner for broader cleaning tasks
Polaris describes its SpaBot as a rechargeable robotic cleaner that scrubs spa surfaces and collects debris in a filter canister. It is a powered cleaner, not a manual surface-skimming net. The product description does not provide a like-for-like performance comparison with nets for collecting floating debris.

What “best” can—and cannot—mean here
The useful choice depends on the job: a mesh net for visible floating debris, a different cleaning method for settled dirt, a compatible replacement assembly for a built-in skimmer, or a powered cleaner for broader surface cleaning. The available product descriptions and manuals do not establish a universal best model, comparative capture rates, time savings, durability rankings, or a quantified efficiency winner. Choose by debris location, tool scope, spa compatibility, and the maintenance procedure your spa maker specifies.
