There is no verified test winner among the low-cost petrol lawnmowers covered here. For a small or medium, mostly flat lawn, a basic push mower is usually the cheaper, simpler choice; for a larger or sloping lawn, self-propelled drive can make mowing less strenuous. UK comparison listings put several candidates below £300, but their prices are snapshots—not proof of performance or current availability.
Cheap petrol lawnmowers to compare
The options below appeared in Which?’s UK petrol-mower comparison capped at £350, accessed on 8 October 2026. The prices are listings from that comparison and can change. Its public listing does not expose the full test scores, pros or cons, so it does not establish which mower cuts best.

| Q Garden QG40-145SP | Self-propelled | £215 | Check the model-specific cutting and collection specifications, and whether its drive suits your lawn. |
| Webb WER410SP | Self-propelled | £220 | Do not confuse it with the Webb WER410HP, which is a push mower. |
| Webb WER460SP | Petrol; mulching listed | £259.95 | Check whether the mulching equipment is included with the exact version and seller. |
| Mountfield SP42 | Petrol; mulching listed | £269 | Confirm model year and included equipment before comparing offers. |
Model names, listed features and prices are from Which?’s petrol mower comparison. The source does not provide comparable cutting widths, collector capacities or full test results in the material available here, so those details should be checked against the exact model specification before buying.
Webb WER410HP: a push-mower search option
DIYFY names the Webb WER410HP as a 41 cm push rotary petrol mower and links to Amazon.co.uk. That identifies a model to compare, but does not establish its present Amazon price, stock, seller or independent test performance. Confirm the listing is for the WER410HP—not the self-propelled WER410SP—before ordering. The model reference comes from DIYFY’s budget petrol mower guide.

Choose by lawn, not by the lowest sticker price
Small or medium, mostly flat lawn
A push mower generally costs less and can suit a smaller or medium garden. You provide all the pushing effort, so consider the lawn’s shape, obstacles and how often you mow as well as its area. For a tight budget, compare a basic push model’s specifications and equipment with the listed price rather than assuming the cheapest listing is the best value.
Large or inclined lawn
Self-propelled drive helps reduce the effort of pushing and can be useful on a larger or sloping lawn. It does not remove the need to steer or manage the mower safely. Check the manufacturer’s manual for slope guidance and confirm that the drive system is appropriate for your terrain. Homebuilding & Renovating discusses the push-versus-self-propelled trade-off in its petrol mower guide.

- 3-in-1 Mowing Function: Mulching, bagging, or side discharge. This versatile system lets you nourish your lawn with fine mulch, simplify cleanup with bagging, or power through tall grass with side discharge.
Clippings, starting and storage
- Clippings: Check whether the exact version collects, mulches or discharges grass. If mulching matters, confirm that the plug or other required equipment is included.
- Collector capacity: Compare capacities in each model’s own specification; the comparison listings cited above do not establish equivalent capacities. A larger collector may mean fewer interruptions, but can add weight when full.
- Starting: Which? says pull-start models can be lighter and less complex, while electric start reduces the physical effort of starting. Check whether the particular mower has electric start and whether it needs a separate battery.
- Storage: Check the mower’s dimensions and the manufacturer’s instructions for folding, cleaning and storage. Petrol equipment needs appropriate fuel storage and seasonal care.
What the available comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
Which? says it buys mowers for annual field tests, but the full results are restricted to members. Its public under-£350 comparison shows model names, selected features and prices, not the full evidence needed to declare a budget winner. Homebuilding & Renovating says it did not hands-on test the petrol mowers in its guide. Treat the shortlist as a starting point for model and price checks, not as a ranking based on comparable public test scores.
There is also a UK price context beyond the budget shortlist: Honda’s official UK store listed the Izy HRG 416 PK at £470 and the self-propelled HRG 416 SK at £630 when accessed on 8 October 2026. Those figures are catalogue listings, not budget recommendations or a like-for-like performance comparison. See Honda Power Products UK’s lawnmower catalogue.

Petrol, fuel and local restrictions
Check the manual before filling or storing fuel
Which? says E10 can be used in lawnmowers and prefers E5; it notes that ethanol attracts water and fuel left for an extended period can go stale. Follow the exact engine’s owner’s manual for approved fuel and storage procedure. Which? advises either running the mower until fuel is used at season’s end or using a fuel stabiliser; do not assume that approach overrides the manual. Its 2026 petrol mower guide also covers fuel and seasonal care.
Check local rules and the trade-off against cordless
Which?’s 2026 guide says there is no UK-wide regulation banning petrol-powered gardening tools, but local councils may impose noise or air-pollution restrictions. Check requirements for your own area. Petrol can suit larger lawns where extended running time and power are priorities, but petrol tools have environmental and health drawbacks; cordless alternatives are quieter and produce no emissions during operation, according to Which?. The sources cited here do not provide a comparable emissions figure or lifetime-cost analysis, so neither environmental impact nor total ownership cost can be quantified from them.
