There is no substantiated universal “best” commercial shower cleaner: the right choice depends on whether you are removing established buildup, preventing its return, or maintaining multiple showers with a custodial dilution system. For a ready-to-use option aimed at visible soap scum, consider Clorox Heavy Duty Bathroom Foamer; for after-shower upkeep, Clorox Plus Tilex Daily Shower Cleaner is designed to be left on; and for facility workflows, Ecolab Scrub Free is a concentrate with separate cleaning and disinfection directions. These are use-case matches based on manufacturer descriptions and instructions, not independently tested rankings.
“Commercial” can mean a cleaner sold for professional facilities, often as a concentrate, or simply a heavy-duty consumer product. There is no universal performance definition established here for “commercial grade,” so compare the format, label directions, and surface compatibility rather than relying on that phrase alone.
Which commercial shower cleaner fits your job?
| Use case | Product example | Format and directions | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Existing soap scum and grime in a home or single shower | Clorox Heavy Duty Bathroom Foamer Soap Scum Remover | Ready-to-use 20 oz foamer; manufacturer directions call for 30 seconds of dwell on heavily soiled areas, followed by wiping and rinsing. | Not for brass, marble, or natural stone; spot-test other surfaces. |
| Routine upkeep after showering | Clorox Plus Tilex Daily Shower Cleaner Spray | Ready-to-use 32 oz spray applied immediately after showering; manufacturer says no rinse, wipe, or scrub is needed. | Not for natural stone or marble, brass, or damaged or cracked surfaces. |
| Repeated cleaning in a commercial bathroom | Ecolab Scrub Free Bathroom Cleaner and Disinfectant | Concentrate with distinct daily-cleaning dilution and disinfection directions; Ecolab’s no-scrubbing claim is tied to daily use with its Scrub Free pump-up foamer. | Not for marble or food-contact surfaces; dilution and contact-time directions must be followed. |

For established soap scum: a ready-to-use foamer
Clorox describes its Heavy Duty Bathroom Foamer as a bleach-free product intended for tough soap scum, grime, and hard-water stains. Its directions are specific: shake the container, spray from 6–8 inches away until the surface is thoroughly wet, let the foam sit for 30 seconds on heavily soiled areas, then wipe and rinse. Repeat if needed. The manufacturer lists showers and tubs, walls, doors, vinyl curtains, glazed ceramic tile, chrome, stainless steel, fiberglass, plastic, and glass among suitable materials.

#1 Best Overall
- Zep CLEANER SHOWER/TUB/TILE 128 OZ ZUSTT128
Do not use it on brass, marble, or natural stone. The manufacturer recommends spot-testing surfaces beyond its listed materials. Its soap-scum product page does not establish that this foamer disinfects; use a product with appropriate disinfection directions if that is the goal.
For daily upkeep: apply after the shower
Clorox Plus Tilex Daily Shower Cleaner Spray is intended for routine prevention rather than a one-time deep clean of established grime. The manufacturer directs users to spray it immediately after showering and leave it in place without rinsing, wiping, or scrubbing. Listed surfaces include glazed tile, most fiberglass, plastic and acrylic, glazed porcelain, cultured marble, terrazzo, glass shower doors, and plastic curtains.
Rank #2
- Zep Commercial acid-based bathroom cleaner removes soap scum and scale from shower, tub, and tile
- Acidic-based bathroom cleaner
- Ready-to-use
The manufacturer says its buildup-prevention approach forms a physical barrier, recommends cleaning a soiled shower first, and notes existing deposits may soften with continued use. Those are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee that old deposits will disappear. The product is excluded from natural stone or marble, brass, and damaged or cracked surfaces.
For facility workflows: concentrate, dilution, and disinfection
Ecolab positions Scrub Free Bathroom Cleaner and Disinfectant for commercial bathrooms and daily hard-water buildup and soap-scum removal. Its listed pack formats are product code 6101797 (1 × 1.5 gal), 6101798 (2 × 2 L), and 6101799 (2 × 1.3 L). Recommended uses include showers, tubs, tile, shower doors and curtains, restroom fixtures, glazed tile, plastic, chrome, glazed porcelain, stainless steel, and glass. The page excludes marble and food-contact surfaces.

For daily cleaning, Ecolab’s directions specify dilution from 1:64 (2 oz per gallon) to 1:21.3 (6 oz per gallon). Its separate disinfection directions require hard, nonporous surfaces to remain wet for five minutes. Do not treat “hospital grade” as a blanket guarantee: disinfection depends on the product label, covered organisms, surface, and procedure. The no-scrubbing benefit Ecolab describes applies when the product is used daily with its Scrub Free pump-up foamer.
Ecolab also describes 66 Heavy Duty Alkaline Bathroom Cleaner and Disinfectant as an EPA-registered cleaner for heavy soap scum and common bathroom soils, while explicitly excluding hospitals and medical settings. That qualification matters if a facility is selecting products for a healthcare environment.

Choose for the surface, not just the soil
Surface compatibility varies by product; “safe for showers” is not enough to establish suitability for every finish. Check the exact product label before use, especially on natural stone, brass, cultured marble, coatings, or damaged materials.
- The Clorox heavy-duty foamer excludes brass, marble, and natural stone.
- Ecolab Scrub Free excludes marble and food-contact surfaces.
- Clorox Plus Tilex Daily Shower Cleaner excludes natural stone or marble, brass, and damaged or cracked surfaces.
These exclusions are not interchangeable: a surface listed for one cleaner may still be excluded by another. If a material is not named as suitable, consult its manufacturer and the cleaner’s label rather than assuming compatibility.

Cleaning is not the same as disinfecting
A product described as removing soap scum is not automatically a disinfectant. If disinfection is required, choose a product whose label covers the intended use and follow its directions, including any pre-cleaning step and wet contact time. For Ecolab Scrub Free, the cited disinfection procedure calls for five minutes of wet contact on hard, nonporous surfaces; that time does not apply to other products.
For general shower cleaning, Clorox’s guidance also stresses following product directions and not mixing cleaners. Its foamer page warns that mixing with household chemicals could produce toxic fumes; Clorox separately warns against mixing bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners. Use one product at a time and follow its label.
How to prevent soap scum between deep cleans
Soap scum forms as soap ingredients combine with minerals in hard water and leave residue on shower surfaces. Regular removal of water and residue helps limit buildup; a daily shower spray is another maintenance option when it is compatible with the surface and used as directed. A maintenance spray should not be expected to replace the initial cleaning of a soiled shower.
What “commercial grade” tells you—and what it does not
Product format and intended workflow are more useful than the phrase “commercial grade.” A ready-to-use consumer foamer avoids measuring and mixing; a facility concentrate can suit repeated custodial use but requires correct dilution and, where specified, dispensing equipment. Neither format alone proves superior cleaning performance.
