How to control indoor humidity
The EPA advises not to humidify above 50% relative humidity. A hygrometer can help you monitor the room. Condensation on windows, walls, or pictures signals that moisture may be excessive; lower the setting, reduce use, or move the humidifier. Humidification is not a goal in itself: adjust output to the room’s conditions.
How often should I clean a humidifier?
The EPA’s June 2022 guidance recommends emptying portable humidifiers, wiping surfaces dry, and refilling them daily. It also recommends cleaning portable units every third day, removing scale, deposits, or film. Unplug the unit before maintenance and follow its manufacturer’s cleaning directions.

If the manufacturer does not specify a cleaning agent, the EPA describes cleaning water-contact surfaces with a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, followed by thorough rinsing with several changes of tap water. Do not leave cleaning-agent residue in the tank. Check the manual before applying any cleaning method to a particular model.
Should I use distilled water in an ultrasonic humidifier?
Low-mineral water can reduce mineral deposits and the minerals dispersed by ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers. The EPA says distilled bottled water will likely contain fewer minerals than most tap water, and that distillation is the most effective of the methods it discusses for removing minerals. Follow the model’s instructions when choosing water.
