If your shower is made by The Onyx Collection, the manufacturer recommends REPEL Cleaner and says to choose non-abrasive products. But “onyx shower” can describe different materials: confirm the manufacturer and surface before cleaning, and follow the care instructions supplied with your shower. The guidance below is specific to The Onyx Collection’s manufactured composite products—not natural onyx stone or every surface called onyx.
First, identify what your shower is made of
The name “onyx” alone is not enough to select a cleaner. The Onyx Collection describes its products as a manufactured composite, so its cleaning directions should not automatically be applied to natural onyx stone or another manufacturer’s shower. Check your installation paperwork or ask the installer to identify the surface, then use the care directions for that material.
What The Onyx Collection recommends
For routine cleaning
The Onyx Collection recommends REPEL Cleaner for its products and says simple weekly cleaning is often enough. Cleaning frequency and buildup can vary with water conditions and use. Its FAQ puts the key rule this way: “Most household cleaners work well with Onyx. Just be sure that the cleaner is non-abrasive (no grit in the cleaner).” The Onyx Collection FAQ names white vinegar, Eliminate Shower Tub & Tile Cleaner, CLR Kitchen & Bath, Kaboom, Scrubbing Bubbles, Clorox cleaners or wipes, Lysol, and Clean Shower as products frequently used on its surfaces. These are manufacturer-listed examples, not independent test results or universal recommendations for other materials.
For soap film or hard-water deposits
For its own products, The Onyx Collection describes white vinegar as a simple option for deposits. Apply it with a sponge or a nylon- or plastic-bristle brush. For stubborn buildup, the manufacturer suggests laying vinegar-soaked paper towels over the area for about 30 minutes, then brushing. Do not use this vinegar method on natural stone unless that surface’s care instructions allow it.
#1 Best Overall
- Cleans to a streak-free shine with a dual action formula that repels water, soil, grime and fingerprints with proven nanotechnology.
- Enhanced with new, microemulsion technology surface cleaning and shielding technology will not streak and provides excellent water-beading and gloss performance. One product cleans & beautifies all surfaces.
- Keeps glass & other hard surfaces “looking new”, shiny and preserved. Perfect for windows, shower glass, mirrors, wall tile, bath surrounds, acrylic, and chrome fixtures (safe on all hard surfaces).
- Prevents hard water spots, soap scum & body oils from penetrating the surfaces for difficult removal.
- Helps make your cleaning much easier. Cleaning Tip: Purchase the Invisible Shield Glass & Shower Coating/Repellent for a more demonstrable, hydrophobic (repellent) glass surface. The duo compliment each other and will essentially eliminate the need to scrub again!
What to avoid
Do not use gritty or abrasive cleaners on The Onyx Collection products. Its FAQ specifically lists traditional Soft Scrub, Comet, and Magic Eraser among products to avoid. Check the cleaner’s label and use the non-abrasive criterion; products within a broad category are not necessarily interchangeable.
Should you use a surface protectant?
The Onyx Collection says a surface protectant can help limit water spots and deposits. A separate care guide for Onyx Collection products names Repel/Ultra Glass as protectants intended to reduce water spots and make cleaning easier. Protection is optional: confirm compatibility with your actual shower surface and follow the product label before applying anything.
Rank #2
How to choose among the named cleaners
The available manufacturer guidance identifies products and care methods, but does not establish comparative cleaning performance, independent test results, or current prices. Rather than treating the list as a ranking, check each candidate against these points:
- Surface match: Is the cleaner compatible with the identified shower material?
- Manufacturer guidance: Does the shower manufacturer recommend it?
- Abrasiveness: Is it non-abrasive and free of grit, as required for The Onyx Collection products?
- Cleaning need: Is it intended for routine cleaning, soap film, or hard-water deposits?
A cleaning question posted by a homeowner after an “onyx shower” installation illustrates why the material check matters: the phrase by itself does not establish the shower’s manufacturer or surface.
