The right thermostat for a millivolt fireplace, wall heater, or floor furnace is one whose documentation explicitly supports the appliance’s millivolt control circuit. A familiar wall-plate fit or a heat setting is not enough. Check the heater manual and the exact thermostat model’s specifications before buying; documented choices include Honeywell Home’s CT33A1009, Braeburn’s digital 3000, and mechanical 505.
What makes a thermostat compatible with a millivolt heater?
A millivolt thermostat must be designed to work with the low-voltage control circuit used by the specific fireplace or heater. Compatibility is not guaranteed by the thermostat’s appearance, its ability to call for heat, or its fit on an existing wall plate.
Check both the appliance and thermostat documentation. The heater manual identifies its control requirements and wiring; the thermostat documentation should state that it supports millivolt systems and specify the supported range. Honeywell Home advises customers to check the thermostat literature for millivolt compatibility, including if the product packaging is no longer available (Honeywell Home support, updated September 2, 2025).
Documented millivolt thermostat options
The following models have manufacturer or retailer documentation indicating millivolt support. This is a compatibility-based shortlist, not a hands-on ranking: the available product information does not establish comparative accuracy, durability, comfort, or long-term reliability.

| Model | Documented millivolt support | Control and power details |
|---|---|---|
| Honeywell Home CT33A1009 | 750 mV; listed for gas fireplaces and floor or wall furnaces (Honeywell Store product listing) | Heat-only, non-programmable thermostat |
| Braeburn 3000 | 250–750 mV millivolt heating (Braeburn Premier Series 3000 specifications) | Digital; specification lists two AA batteries or 24 V AC |
| Braeburn 505 | 250–750 mV millivolt heat-only systems (Braeburn 500 Series manual) | Mechanical, heat-only thermostat |
| Braeburn 500 | 250–750 mV millivolt heat-only systems (Braeburn 500 Series manual) | Mechanical model; documentation describes additional system applications beyond the 505 |
How to choose the right type
Choose heat-only when the appliance only needs heat control
A fireplace or wall heater generally needs a thermostat appropriate to its heating control circuit, not a conventional heating-and-cooling setup by default. The Braeburn manual identifies the 505 as heat-only and describes broader applications for the 500. Confirm the exact model’s function against the heater manual rather than assuming that a thermostat with extra modes is a better fit.
Choose mechanical or digital controls based on the interface you want
The CT33A1009 and Braeburn 505 are documented basic, non-digital or mechanical options; the Braeburn 3000 is digital. Those distinctions describe their control style, not a proven difference in accuracy or reliability.

Match the millivolt range and power source
Do not treat “millivolt compatible” as a universal specification. The cited Braeburn models document 250–750 mV support, while the CT33A1009 is specified for 750 mV. The Braeburn 3000 specification lists two AA batteries or 24 V AC; Honeywell Home notes that 750 mV-compatible thermostats are typically battery powered. Verify the exact model’s requirements and the heater’s instructions before installation.

Use the wiring diagram and installation instructions for both the thermostat and appliance. Wiring varies by equipment and model, so a generic terminal-to-terminal diagram may be unsafe or incorrect.
