How to Choose a Shower Seat for an Older Adult: Chairs, Transfer Benches and Safety

A shower seat may make bathing more manageable, but the right design depends on the user’s transfer ability and bathroom. Learn what to compare and which safety changes belong alongside a seat.

A shower seat can make bathing more manageable for an older adult who has difficulty standing, but the right choice depends on the bathroom layout and the person’s ability to get into and out of the bathing area. A compact shower chair, a tub-spanning transfer bench and a sliding bench serve different needs; none should be treated as a stand-alone guarantee against falls.

When can a shower seat help?

MedlinePlus recommends sitting on a bath chair or bench when showering. Its guidance is a practical safety measure, not evidence that a particular seat prevents falls for every person. Consider whether standing through a shower is tiring, difficult, or uncomfortable, and whether the person can sit down and rise safely using the support available.

MedlinePlus includes the question “Do I need a shower chair?” among questions to discuss with a health care provider. If it is unclear which bathroom changes or seat design are suitable, ask a health care provider about a referral to an occupational or physical therapist for an assessment of the person and bathroom. The related question “Do I need help when I take a shower or bath?” can also help start that conversation.

Choose a seat that fits the bathroom and the transfer

First identify whether the bathing area is a walk-in shower or a bathtub with a wall to step over. Then consider whether the person can step over that wall, needs to sit before entering, or needs a seat that moves along a frame. These designs are not interchangeable.

Freestanding shower chair

A freestanding chair sits inside a tub or shower. It is intended for a bathing area where the user can get in and position themselves at the seat. Check that its legs fit within the available floor space and that the chair will not block the entrance, water controls or access for assistance. Moen’s published shower-chair models vary in dimensions and adjustment ranges, so check the specifications for the exact model rather than relying on the category name. Moen shower chair and transfer bench identification and installation

Bathtub transfer bench

A transfer bench spans the tub wall, leaving part of the seat outside the tub. The user can sit down outside the bathing area and move across the seat instead of stepping over the wall while standing. Whether this transfer is appropriate depends on the person’s ability and the exact tub and bench setup.

These are specifications for that model, not a guarantee of suitability or a clinical safety finding. Moen shower chair and transfer bench identification and installation

Sliding transfer bench

A sliding bench has a seat that moves along its frame to assist with entry and exit. Drive Medical describes this feature on model RTL12075 and lists a 300-pound capacity. Confirm that the product’s configuration suits the user and bathroom; its sliding feature does not establish that the transfer is safe for every person. Wall-mounted folding seat

A folding seat may suit a shower designed or renovated for accessible use. This is a construction and installation choice, not simply a substitute for placing a portable chair in any shower. The seat, wall support and shower configuration must be appropriate for the intended use and applicable requirements.

Compare the exact model before choosing

Product category alone does not tell you whether a seat will fit or suit the user. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and the bathroom measurements together.

How ADA shower-seat standards apply

The U.S. Access Board’s bathing-room guide describes requirements for covered accessible facilities, not a universal product rule for every residential shower chair. For covered transfer and roll-in shower compartments, it describes rectangular or L-shaped seats and a seat-height range of 17–19 inches. It also states that the seat, fasteners, mounting devices and supporting structure must withstand a 250-pound vertical or horizontal force at any point.

Those design provisions should not be used on their own to select a home shower chair or determine what a particular person can use safely. The guide distinguishes transfer showers, which have seats, from roll-in showers as a different access option. U.S. Access Board: Chapter 6, Bathing Rooms

Make the bathroom safer beyond the seat

A seat is one part of a safer bathing setup. MedlinePlus recommends nonslip mats or rubber or silicone decals in the tub, a nonskid bath mat outside it, and keeping the floor outside the tub or shower dry. It also advises setting the water heater to no more than 120°F (49°C) to help prevent burns. MedlinePlus: Bathroom safety for adults

Grab bars need to be securely installed; MedlinePlus advises mounting them to the wall vertically or horizontally and explicitly warns against using towel racks as grab bars. The National Institute on Aging also recommends grab bars near toilets and on both the inside and outside of a tub or shower, nonskid mats or strips on surfaces that may get wet, and leaving a bathroom light on at night or using an automatic night light. National Institute on Aging: Preventing Falls at Home: Room by Room

The National Institute on Aging reports that more than one in four people age 65 or older fall each year; this is general fall context, not a statistic about bathroom falls or shower-seat effectiveness. National Institute on Aging: Six Tips To Help Prevent Falls, updated June 5, 2025
