The best cockroach killer paste is not a universally proven brand: “paste” usually means gel bait, and the right choice depends on the cockroach species, where it can legally be used, and the product’s current label. Choose a registered product whose label fits your situation, place it near cockroach activity exactly as directed, and monitor for results.
What cockroach killer paste is—and what it can do
Cockroach killer paste generally refers to gel bait: an insecticide mixed with an attractant and dispensed in small placements near cockroach hiding or foraging areas. University of Maryland Extension describes gel as one of several bait formats. Gel can be useful in suitable cracks and concealed locations, while bait stations offer a contained alternative where their labels permit placement.
EPA registration and product labels establish which uses are permitted for a named product; they do not show that one brand outperforms every other bait. The available EPA and university extension guidance does not establish a single best product across species, infestation levels, homes, and application conditions. Nor does it establish a generally applicable percentage killed or a reliable number of days to control.
How to choose a gel bait
- Match the label to the cockroach and setting. Check that the label names the target cockroach or permitted use site relevant to you. Product approvals and permitted uses can vary by jurisdiction.
- Compare active ingredient and label, not brand claims alone. EPA’s record for Advion Cockroach Gel Bait lists indoxacarb at 0.6% active ingredient and an accepted label dated July 25, 2024. That identifies the product; it is not evidence that Advion is more effective than other baits.
- Check placement, rate, and restrictions. Directions differ between products. Do not transfer a dose or placement instruction from one label to another.
- Choose a usable format. Gel allows small placements near suitable harborage when the label permits. A bait station may suit a location where a contained format is preferable, but it too must be used only as its label directs.
- Plan to monitor. Sticky monitoring traps can help identify activity and assess whether control measures are working.
Where and how to place gel bait
Placement is central to baiting. University of Maryland Extension recommends placing bait near cockroach activity and harborage, including suitable cracks and crevices, while following the product label. Avoid exposed or convenient-looking locations if the label does not permit them.

- Inspect first. Look for cockroach activity and likely hiding or foraging areas. Monitoring traps can help locate activity.
- Read the product label before opening the bait. Confirm allowed indoor locations, target species, application rate, placement method, and precautions for children, pets, food, and food-contact areas.
- Apply only the directed amount in permitted locations. One EPA label notes that smaller placements may control faster than fewer, larger placements. This is product-specific guidance, not a universal rule; follow the directions for the gel you have.
- Monitor and reassess. Check activity and evaluate whether control measures are working. Follow the label for any reapplication or cleanup.
Application quantities vary by product, cockroach group, and infestation. For example, the U.S. EPA’s CSI 16-202 label dated December 9, 2024 lists 1 to 2 grams per square yard for its large-cockroach group. The same label allows up to 3.0 grams per square yard for severe or heavy infestations of small cockroach species. These are label-specific application figures, not independent efficacy results or general dosing advice for other gels.
Safety: follow the label and keep bait inaccessible
Do not treat food-preparation surfaces, areas accessible to children or pets, or recently sprayed areas unless the product label explicitly permits the use. The cited EPA consumer-use label also warns not to spray insecticide over gel bait because doing so may make the bait repellent. These are instructions for that label; follow the label supplied with the product you buy and applicable local requirements.

The U.S. EPA’s CSI 16-202 Roach Gel consumer-use label (2019) states: “It is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.” Pesticide labels are legally important directions, not optional suggestions. If you cannot place bait where the label permits while keeping it inaccessible to children and pets, do not use that placement.

Baiting works best as part of an inspection-and-follow-up plan rather than a one-time placement. Rutgers’ German cockroach guidance describes inspection, sanitation, baiting, and follow-up; University of Maryland Extension recommends monitoring populations and evaluating control measures. If activity continues, reassess where cockroaches are active and whether the label’s placement and reapplication directions have been followed. Consider a licensed pest-control professional when the infestation persists or you cannot apply bait appropriately.
