Choose by what the ABS must bond to, how closely the parts fit, the loads and service conditions, and the adhesive’s safety requirements. For ABS model parts, use a cement made for ABS; for ABS pipe, use cement labeled for ABS plumbing within its stated scope; for many larger household or mixed-material repairs, consider a two-part epoxy whose current product data confirms compatibility with both surfaces.
Choose by the job, not just by the label
An adhesive described as compatible with ABS is not automatically suitable for every ABS joint. Check both materials in the joint, the gap and fit, expected load and impact, flexibility, temperature, moisture or chemical exposure, appearance, and the adhesive’s work and cure requirements. Permabond’s ABS bonding guidance identifies these application conditions as relevant to adhesive selection.
- ABS model parts: Choose a cement specifically formulated for ABS and follow its label. For example, Tamiya Cement for ABS is intended for ABS model parts and can also cement ABS to styrene.
- ABS plumbing: Use cement specified for ABS pipe and fittings, and only within its stated application and size limits. Plumbing cement is not a general-purpose household ABS adhesive.
- Household repairs or mixed materials: A two-part plastic epoxy may be appropriate if the current technical data confirms both substrates and the expected service conditions. Henkel identifies ABS among the materials bonded by Loctite Epoxy Plastic.
Cyanoacrylates, structural acrylics, polyurethanes, and UV-curing adhesives may also bond ABS in suitable applications. Product formulation and joint design matter; UV-curing adhesive additionally needs light to reach the bond joint. No cited source establishes one adhesive type as strongest across all ABS applications.
How the joint changes the choice
Check the second surface
ABS-to-ABS is not the same selection problem as ABS-to-styrene, ABS-to-metal, or ABS-to-another plastic. Confirm that the chosen adhesive’s data covers both sides of the joint. Compatibility with ABS alone does not establish compatibility with the other substrate.

Match the adhesive to the fit
Solvent cement works through solvent action on compatible plastic surfaces, so follow the product’s instructions for fit and application. A separate adhesive layer, such as epoxy, may suit a repair that needs a bond line, but check the product’s permitted gap and load rather than assuming it will fill any space.
Account for service conditions and cure
Consider impact, flexibility, temperature, moisture, chemicals, and appearance. Also distinguish working time, set or fixture time, handling time, and full cure. Product figures below describe different products and conditions; they are not a head-to-head performance comparison.

Prepare ABS and work safely
Permabond advises that clean, dry ABS without contamination can generally be bonded as received. If cleaning is needed, its guidance recommends isopropanol or Permabond Cleaner A and warns that acetone can attack ABS. Follow the selected adhesive’s own preparation instructions, particularly for coated or stressed plastic and dissimilar-material joints.

Read the exact product label and current safety data sheet before use. Solvent cements can involve flammable vapors and product-specific ventilation and protective-equipment requirements. The 2012 SCIGRIP 1707 sheet names methyl ethyl ketone, calls the cement extremely flammable, warns that vapor is harmful, and directs users to provide adequate ventilation; because that sheet is dated, use current safety documentation and labeling for present handling requirements.
