First decide whether you need to strain tea as it is poured from a teapot or steep leaves directly in a cup. A cup-top strainer catches leaves during pouring; an in-cup infuser holds leaves while they steep. They do different jobs, so compare products within the right category.
Choose by brewing method: straining or steeping
- Cup-top strainer: Place it over the receiving cup and pour brewed tea through it. This is useful when leaves steep loose in a teapot without an infuser.
- In-cup infuser: Put tea leaves in its basket or tube and immerse it in the cup while the tea steeps. It must fit the cup and leave enough room for the leaves to expand.
Other tools with similar names serve different purposes. A mesh ball is suspended in a hot beverage rather than set over a cup, while a matcha sifter is intended to sift powder, not steep loose leaves.
Compare the documented options
These examples illustrate different designs and published specifications; they are not a tested ranking. The available product pages do not establish that one construction filters better or makes better-tasting tea.
| Design and example | Seller-stated details | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Cup-top strainer with drip dish — Teaspoon Tea Co | The seller describes it for tea brewed in a teapot without an infuser. It lists a 50 mm strainer diameter and a 65 mm handle length. The page names a drip dish. | Measure the cup opening and check whether the short handle will rest securely. Confirm the dish is included with the version you are considering. |
| Fine-mesh strainer — MUJI USA | MUJI lists an 18-8 stainless-steel strainer with fine mesh, approximate overall dimensions of 7.5 × 17.5 cm, and an 8.5 cm handle. | Compare the dimensions and handle reach with your cup or teapot. The product page does not state mesh aperture or independently measured particle retention. |
| Press-open in-cup infuser — Oliver Pluff & Co | The maker describes a stainless-steel basket that opens when the handle is pressed. It lists approximate capacity of 1–2 teaspoons, suggests a 12–14 oz mug or cup, and gives dimensions of 7 inches long by 1.5 inches deep. | Check the basket capacity and depth against your serving and cup. The maker advises: “For best results, avoid overfilling the basket so the tea leaves have room to expand as they steep.” This is product-use guidance, not an independent test finding. |
| Tube-style in-cup infuser — PHAEVOX BrewTube | The seller lists a 304 stainless-steel tube measuring 15 cm long by 2 cm in diameter, with a curved hook intended to rest on a mug rim. | Check the tube length against mug depth and the hook against the rim. The product description does not establish independent performance or a stated leaf capacity. |
| Mesh ball infuser — Norpro | Norpro lists a 2.5-inch stainless-steel mesh infuser with chain and hook for suspension in hot beverages; it is also described as suitable for spices. | Check that the chain reaches into your vessel. Norpro recommends hand washing. |
| Matcha sifter — Ippodo chakoshi | Ippodo describes this as a tea strainer for sifting matcha powder. | Choose it for sifting matcha, not for containing loose leaves during steeping. |
How to check fit and capacity
For a cup-top strainer
- Measure the receiving cup’s opening and compare it with the strainer’s diameter.
- Check that the handle reaches far enough to sit securely on the cup. The short 65 mm handle listed by Teaspoon Tea Co may suit some setups but should not be assumed to fit every cup.
- If you are straining from a teapot, make sure the strainer can be positioned over the receiving vessel as you pour.
- Check whether a drip dish is included if you want somewhere to set the strainer after pouring.
For an in-cup infuser
- Compare the basket or tube dimensions with the cup’s depth and opening, and check how its handle, hook, or chain rests on the rim.
- Use a stated capacity when available. Oliver Pluff lists approximately 1–2 teaspoons and suggests a 12–14 oz cup or mug; its page advises leaving room for leaves to expand.
- Do not assume that a tube, mesh basket, or perforated basket has a particular filtration performance based on its shape alone.
Construction, cleaning, and care
Mesh strainers, press-open baskets, and tube infusers are distinct constructions. Product descriptions identify their form, but do not provide a comparable measure of how well they retain fine particles. Choose based on the brewing step you need, the vessel fit, stated capacity, and the care instructions rather than treating a design label as proof of filtration quality.
