For existing hard-water deposits and soap scum, CLR Brilliant Bath is the most directly matched option in the available product information: its maker says it targets both. But it is not suitable for every shower surface. If you have vinyl, natural stone, a mirror, coated material or colored grout, check the product’s exclusions and choose a cleaner whose label explicitly allows your surface. For preventing new buildup, a daily spray is a different tool from a cleaner meant to remove established deposits.
Choose by residue, surface and cleaning goal
“Best” depends on what is on the shower and what it is made of. Hard-water marks and soap scum may call for a cleaner marketed for mineral deposits and residue; a daily shower spray is intended to help limit new buildup. Neither category is automatically right for every finish.
- For established deposits: look for a product whose maker specifically lists hard-water deposits or calcium and lime, as well as soap scum.
- For ongoing maintenance: a daily spray may help prevent buildup when used as directed after each shower.
- For any surface: verify compatibility on the exact product label, including restrictions on stone, vinyl, grout, mirrors and coatings.
Manufacturer descriptions establish what a product is marketed to do, not that it will outperform every competitor. Consumer Reports’ June 16, 2026 shower-cleaner review says it tested 12 products on ceramic and porcelain tiles using a mixture of grated bar soap and hard water to mimic soap scum and oily residue, following each product’s label. The available report identifies Method Daily Shower Spray as both a preventer and a cleaner, but does not provide enough product-by-product results to rank all the options below against one another.

When CLR Brilliant Bath is a fit—and when it is not
CLR Brilliant Bath is a reasonable starting point when the problem is hard-water deposits and soap scum on a surface the maker lists, such as ceramic tile, porcelain, fiberglass or a shower door. Its stated application allows either applying the foam to a damp cleaning tool or applying it directly to the surface, followed by rinsing with clean, cold water.

Do not use it on any of the surfaces its maker excludes: vinyl, natural stone, mirrors, plastic laminates, wood, fabrics, painted, coated or sealed surfaces, colored grout or wall coverings. If your shower includes multiple materials, treat each one separately and use only a cleaner whose directions permit that material. A broad bathroom label is not a substitute for checking the exact surface restrictions.
Use a daily spray for prevention, not as a substitute for removal
Clorox describes Plus Tilex Daily Shower Cleaner as a bleach-free spray to help prevent soap scum, hard-water buildup and mildew stains. Its directions call for misting surfaces after each shower and leaving the product without rinsing, wiping or scrubbing. That routine is aimed at keeping new residue from accumulating; it does not establish that the spray can remove thick, established scale.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 review says products claiming to prevent soap-scum buildup worked well at that task, and identifies Method Daily Shower Spray as both a preventer and a cleaner. That finding is about the review’s test and does not establish a head-to-head result for every product in this comparison.

- Read the package directions for the exact product and check that your shower material is included or not excluded.
- Follow stated application, dwell, wiping, scrubbing and rinsing directions; do not assume products with similar target claims work the same way.
- Do not mix cleaning chemicals.
- Follow all precautions on the package and store cleaners out of reach of children and pets.
An EPA label available for an older registered product says that using it inconsistently with its directions violates federal law, but that 2010 label does not establish the current formulation or directions for products discussed here. The package label for the product you have is the relevant guide.
