The right French-door lock depends on the whole door set, not just the lock’s label. Secure both leaves: the active leaf you use every day and the inactive leaf that must be held firmly in place. Match the hardware to the door material, frame, existing preparation and measurements before buying.
What hardware does a pair of French doors need?
A typical pair has an active leaf that opens and closes routinely, and an inactive leaf that is usually opened less often. Locking the active leaf alone leaves the other leaf unsecured. A common arrangement combines a handle and lock on the active leaf with top and bottom flush bolts on the inactive leaf; other systems use a compatible passive-leaf mechanism.
First identify how your pair is built. The inactive leaf may work with a floating mullion or another interlocking mechanism, or the doors may have a fixed arrangement. Hardware designed for one configuration is not automatically suitable for another.
French-door lock types and what they secure

How to check whether a lock will fit
Do not buy based only on a phrase such as “French door lock.” Before selecting a replacement, record the existing hardware and the door’s configuration. Compare those details with the exact manufacturer variant and installation information.

- Existing preparation: Check the faceplate, lock model, edge cut-out or mortise, and strike or keep positions. A different lock architecture may require different preparation.
- Measurements: Measure the backset and center-case/PZ spacing, then verify the dimensions for the precise product. Yale lists 35 mm and 45 mm variants for the YS170 and Lockmaster families; ERA’s cited French-door system specifies 45 mm. Yale Lockmaster specifications.
- Handing and operation: Confirm the handing and that the locking sequence works with your leaves, handles and frame. Consider how occupants will operate the door and whether the arrangement preserves safe egress and meets applicable local requirements.
- Installation: For a complex replacement or a multipoint system, use the model-specific installation information or consult a qualified door-hardware professional. A product’s fit claim alone does not establish that installation or egress is suitable.
What the published figures do—and do not—tell you
Manufacturer figures can help verify a particular model, but they are not a like-for-like independent test of competing French-door locks. No controlled comparative test or market-wide fit standard is established by the product information cited here.

Choose by door configuration, not by a generic “best” label
There is no evidence here for an overall tested winner. For a replacement, start with the existing preparation and confirm dimensions. If you are changing the locking arrangement, decide how the inactive leaf will be retained before comparing active-leaf locks. Then check the exact model’s stated door compatibility, installation requirements, operation and any relevant certification claims.
