Best Shower Chair for Hip Replacement: How to Choose a Chair or Transfer Bench

A shower chair may suit a walk-in shower; a tub transfer bench may help with bathtub entry. Choose with the care team, based on bathroom layout, transfer ability, and wound-care instructions.

The right bathing aid depends first on the bathroom: a stable shower chair may suit a walk-in shower, while a tub transfer bench can help someone enter and leave a bathtub while seated. Neither makes an unsafe transfer safe. Before buying or showering, ask the surgeon or occupational therapist which setup, transfer method, and shower start date fit the patient’s mobility, precautions, incision, and dressing.

Choose by bathroom layout and transfer ability

After hip replacement, a chair or bench can make it possible to sit while bathing rather than stand throughout. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) advise patients to consider bathroom equipment and discuss it with their care team. The choice is not simply about which product has more features: the person must be able to get to the seat and transfer onto and off it safely.

Option Best suited to What it helps with Confirm before buying or using
Shower chair A walk-in shower or shower stall Sitting while bathing without standing the whole time Can the person step into the shower and sit safely? Does the chair fit without blocking entry? Is its seat height suitable?
Tub transfer bench A bathtub with a wall to cross Seated entry and exit over the bathtub wall Does it fit and span the tub securely? Can the person move their legs across with current precautions? Has a clinician or therapist demonstrated the transfer?

Northwestern Medicine describes using a tub transfer bench to move across a bathtub wall while seated; University of Utah Health also describes a seated bathtub transfer using a shower chair or transfer bench. A standard shower chair inside a tub does not, by itself, solve the problem of getting over the tub wall.

How to compare shower chairs and benches

Once the care team confirms the type of aid, check the actual bathroom and the person’s needs rather than relying on a generic “best” label. The guidance cited here supports considering chairs and benches, but does not rank brands or establish a universally best feature set.

  • Bathroom fit: Measure the usable shower or tub area and confirm the equipment will not obstruct entry, controls, or the person’s movement.
  • Seat height and user fit: Check whether the person can sit down and stand up with the mobility and precautions they currently have. Ask the therapist whether arms or a backrest would help.
  • Stability: Follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions and confirm the chair or bench sits securely on the bathroom surface. Do not use a product that rocks or shifts.
  • Capacity: Check the manufacturer’s stated load rating against the user. The clinical sources do not specify a portable chair capacity, so do not infer one from accessibility standards for fixed seats.
  • Transfer method: Ask a therapist to demonstrate how to use the chosen aid in the relevant bathroom configuration.

The U.S. Access Board’s guidance for certain covered accessible shower compartments specifies a fixed-seat height of 17–19 inches and a requirement to withstand 250 pounds of force. Those specifications apply to fixed accessible seats and their supporting structures—not to portable consumer shower chairs or their load ratings. See the Access Board guide to bathing rooms.

Ask when showering is allowed

Follow the surgeon’s instructions for the incision, dressing, and first shower. AAOS notes that many dressings are waterproof but still tells patients to follow their doctor’s directions about when to shower or bathe. Northwestern Medicine likewise says to shower only after the surgeon gives permission. A waterproof dressing is not, by itself, clearance to shower immediately, and a shower chair does not change wound-care instructions.

MedlinePlus discharge information gives one institution-specific example of waiting 3 to 4 days or until the surgeon says showering is allowed. That is not a universal timeline: the patient’s own instructions take precedence. Do not soak in a bath or pool unless the treating team clears it.

Use the transfer method taught by the care team

For a bathtub transfer, Northwestern Medicine’s discharge instructions describe backing up until the legs touch the bench, reaching back and lowering slowly while keeping the operated leg forward, sitting, scooting back, then lifting the legs over one at a time. The instructions say to turn on the water only after the person is safely seated. This is an example of facility guidance, not a substitute for training: follow the patient’s full discharge instructions and ask the surgeon or therapist to demonstrate the method for their mobility and precautions.

University of Utah Health also describes transferring into a tub from a seated position and swinging the legs in. The safe approach depends on the person and bathroom, so do not assume that a technique suitable for one patient will work for another.

Questions to take to the surgeon or occupational therapist

  • Is a shower chair or a tub transfer bench more appropriate for this bathroom?
  • When may the patient shower, and what instructions apply to the incision and dressing?
  • What transfer method should the patient use with their current precautions, and can you demonstrate it?
  • Does the patient need help from another person, grab bars, or a handheld shower head?
  • What seat height, support features, and manufacturer-stated capacity should we look for?
