A good starting point for a hot, dry climate is the Honeywell CL60PM outdoor evaporative cooler; for hose-fed airflow with mist, consider the Newair AF-600. Neither should be expected to cool an entire open patio like a refrigerated system cools a sealed room.
What works as an outdoor air conditioner for a patio?
Open patios continually exchange air with the outdoors, so portable products marketed for outdoor cooling provide localized relief rather than room-style temperature control. The main choices here work differently:
- Evaporative coolers draw air through wet media. Evaporation cools the moving air, so performance depends on conditions; Honeywell says its CL60PM works best below 60% humidity and in hot, dry regions. Evaporative cooling also needs airflow and ventilation.
- Misting fans propel water droplets into outdoor air while moving air with a fan. The mist may make nearby surfaces or people damp, depending on the setup and conditions.
Honeywell’s product page puts the distinction plainly: “An Evaporative Air Cooler is NOT an Air Conditioner.” This is useful when comparing listings: look for the cooling mechanism and intended setting, not just the word “A/C.”
Compare patio cooling options
| Model and type | Manufacturer-published specifications or claims | Most suitable use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honeywell CL60PM outdoor evaporative cooler | 2,697 CFM; recommended area up to 1,643 sq. ft.; 15.9-gallon tank; 220 watts; maximum 65 dBA; continuous water hookup; 120 V; ETL certification; one-year limited warranty. Figures and warranty are listed by Honeywell Air Comfort; product-page publication year is not stated. | A full-size movable cooler candidate for an open patio in a hot, dry location. | Honeywell says it is not an air conditioner and performs best below 60% humidity. Coverage and performance are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results. |
| Newair AF-600 misting/pedestal fan | Up to 2,800 CFM; coverage up to 600 sq. ft.; three speeds; standard garden-hose connection; integrated GFCI plug. Figures are listed by Newair; product-page publication year is not stated. | A fan-first option where a hose connection is convenient and outdoor mist is acceptable. | Misting is a different mechanism from evaporative media cooling. Its coverage figure should not be treated as directly comparable with another manufacturer’s estimate. |
| Solo Stove Windchill 47 portable cooler | Manufacturer advertises 3+ hours, up to 11°F cooler at 2 ft and 6°F at 4 ft, plus a three-year limited warranty. Product-page publication year is not stated. | Mobile, personal-zone cooling. | Its advertised temperature differences are manufacturer claims; this is not evidence of patio-wide cooling. |
| Portacool APEX 1200 evaporative cooler | 4,000 CFM; 1,200 sq. ft. optimal cooling area; 40-gallon reservoir; 51 dB; 120 V; 5.0 amps; 134 lb. Figures are listed by Portacool; product-page publication year is not stated. | A larger open area where commercial-scale capacity and equipment size are appropriate. | At 134 lb, it may be excessive for an ordinary small patio. The listed area and performance are manufacturer claims, not head-to-head test findings. |
These figures come from different manufacturers and are not a controlled comparison. Coverage estimates in particular may use different assumptions, so use them as product-page guidance rather than a promise that one model cools more effectively than another.

How to choose the right type and size
Start with humidity and ventilation
If your summers are often humid, do not assume an evaporative cooler will provide strong relief: Honeywell says the CL60PM performs best below 60% humidity. In a dry climate, an evaporative model is a more plausible fit. Because it cools by evaporation, allow air to move through and away from the patio rather than treating it as a sealed-room appliance.
Use airflow as a sizing clue, not a guarantee
Honeywell recommends using airflow, measured in CFM, as a primary sizing indicator. Compare CFM alongside the area the manufacturer recommends, but do not treat either figure as an independently verified promise for your particular patio. Patio openness, placement, wind and layout all affect what reaches the seating area.

Plan water and placement
A tank-based cooler needs refilling; a larger tank can reduce refill frequency but usually adds bulk. The CL60PM lists a 15.9-gallon tank and a continuous water hookup, while the Newair AF-600 connects to a standard garden hose. Before choosing a hose-fed unit, check that the connection can reach the intended position and that routing a hose will not create a trip hazard. With a misting fan, decide whether dampness is acceptable around furniture, cushions, food or electrical equipment.
Check practical constraints before buying
- Noise: The CL60PM is listed at a maximum 65 dBA; Portacool lists 51 dB for the APEX 1200. Manufacturer figures may not be measured or reported under identical conditions.
- Footprint and mobility: A full-size cooler needs room for placement and airflow. The Portacool APEX 1200’s listed weight is 134 lb, making portability a more significant consideration.
- Power and outdoor setup: Honeywell lists 120 V and ETL certification for the CL60PM; Newair lists an integrated GFCI plug for the AF-600. Follow each model’s manual, use electrical equipment and connections suitable for the outdoor environment, and keep water away from connections as directed.
- Ongoing effort: Consider tank refills, water access, cleaning and seasonal storage—not just advertised cooling coverage.
Which option makes sense for your patio?
- Choose the Honeywell CL60PM as a candidate if the patio is open, your climate is hot and dry, and you want a full-size evaporative cooler. Its humidity caveat is central to whether it is a good fit.
- Consider the Newair AF-600 if you prefer a pedestal fan with a garden-hose connection and want misting rather than wet-media evaporation. Account for possible dampness.
- Look at the Solo Stove Windchill 47 when the goal is portable personal relief near one or a few people, not cooling the whole patio.
- Consider the Portacool APEX 1200 only when a larger open area justifies a heavier, higher-capacity unit.
No independent comparative testing is established for these examples, and current retailer stock or prices are not stated here. Treat the specifications and coverage numbers as manufacturer-published information, then confirm the model details and warranty terms on the manufacturer’s product page before purchase.
