For most hard-floor homes, TechRadar’s current hardwood-floor guide names the Shark PowerDetect Cordless its overall pick; it selects the lighter Dreame R20 for value and the Dyson Gen5detect as a premium option. Those are one publication’s testing-based choices, not universal winners. The right fit depends on debris, floorhead, weight, runtime needs, and whether you also clean rugs or carpet.
What matters most on hard floors
Choose the floorhead for the surface
A dedicated soft or fluffy hard-floor head is a useful feature to look for. TechRadar highlights one on the Dreame R20 and the Fluffy Optic head on the Dyson Gen5detect. Dyson describes the V15 Detect’s Fluffy Optic head as illuminating dust on hard floors; that is the manufacturer’s product claim, not an independent finding. For a home with both hard flooring and carpet, check which heads are included and whether they suit each surface.
Balance pickup against handling
Fine dust and larger debris can call for different strengths, while a vacuum’s weight and maneuverability affect how easy it is to use across a room. Consider the listed weight alongside the kinds of messes you clean, and do not assume a strong pickup result means a model will feel light or nimble.
Treat runtime as a maximum, not a cleaning-time guarantee
The runtimes below are maximum figures listed by TechRadar or claimed by Dyson. Actual runtime varies with cleaning mode, floorhead, and use, so a maximum does not tell you how long the vacuum will run during a typical whole-home clean.

How the leading options compare
TechRadar’s guide, accessed in 2026, names three picks for hardwood floors. Its listed weights, bin capacities, and maximum runtimes are summarized here; specifications and bundles can vary by market.
| Model | Why consider it | Weight | Bin | Maximum runtime listed | Trade-offs noted |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shark PowerDetect Cordless | TechRadar’s overall hardwood-floor pick; reported to handle fine dust and larger debris, including on backward passes | 8 lb / 3.7 kg | 0.7 L | Up to 70 minutes | Heavy, less maneuverable than alternatives, and takes four hours to recharge |
| Dreame R20 | TechRadar’s value pick; includes a dedicated hard-floor head and has the lightest listed body of these three | 6 lb / 2.7 kg | 0.6 L | Up to 90 minutes | Review flags noise and no low-power mode |

Which one fits your home?
Shark PowerDetect Cordless: prioritize pickup over light weight
TechRadar calls it “the best-performing vacuum for hardwood floors we’ve tested.” That is the guide’s editorial conclusion based on its testing, not an independent consensus. Its reported strength with both fine dust and larger debris makes it a plausible choice if pickup is your main priority. The weight and maneuverability drawbacks matter if you carry a vacuum between floors or prefer a lighter stick.

Dreame R20: look for a lighter value option
The R20 pairs a dedicated hard-floor head with a listed weight of 6 lb / 2.7 kg and a maximum runtime of up to 90 minutes in TechRadar’s guide. It is the value pick in that guide, but its noise and lack of a low-power mode are worth weighing against the price you find locally; current prices were not established.
Dyson Gen5detect: consider the premium pick with caveats
The Gen5detect is TechRadar’s premium selection. The guide reports good everyday cleaning of dust, crumbs, and pet hair, but says it can struggle with larger debris, including rice and corn kernels. Its listed 7.7 lb / 3.5 kg weight and premium positioning may make it a poor fit if low weight or cost is decisive.
