The best folding grill depends on whether you’ll roll it from the car or carry it by hand. For car trips and tailgating, a wheeled grill with a stand is easier to move at the destination; for a lighter hand-carry option, look for a tabletop grill with a folding body or legs. Compare the grill’s folded footprint and actual weight—not just the word “compact”—and check that its fuel is allowed where you plan to cook.
What “folding grill” can mean
Folding describes several different designs. They do not offer the same mix of portability, cooking space, or setup convenience.
- Folding legs: The legs tuck or swing beneath a compact grill body. Weber’s Go-Anywhere uses legs that fold and lock its lid for transport. It is a tabletop-style grill, not a wheeled cart. Weber’s Go-Anywhere series.
- Folding body: The grill itself collapses into a flatter package, usually for carrying by hand. The nomadiQ is a propane example with two separately controlled cooking sides. nomadiQ’s product specifications.
- Collapsing cart: The grill and stand fold together for storage, while wheels help move it on-site. This design can be convenient beside a vehicle, but a stand and larger body may still take up considerable trunk space.
None of these categories automatically makes a grill suitable for backpacking. Check weight, folded dimensions, and how you’ll carry it before choosing.

Choose by how you’ll transport it
For car trips and tailgating
A wheeled grill and stand can be easier to move from a parking spot to a cooking area than a grill you must carry. The Traveler Compact is a concrete reference point: Weber lists it at 37 pounds and 32 inches wide, and says it is designed to fit in most compact-car trunks. Before buying, measure the trunk opening and storage area, and consider whether you can lift the grill into the vehicle. Wheels help at the destination; they do not reduce the weight you must load.
For a lighter hand-carry option
A fold-flat or folding-body tabletop grill may be a better fit when you want to carry the grill rather than roll it. nomadiQ lists its grill at 12.3 pounds and gives folded dimensions of 14.2 × 16 × 6 inches, alongside 226 square inches of cooking surface. Compare those figures with the carry distance and the cooking space you actually need. A listed area alone does not establish how many people a grill will serve comfortably.

For space-conscious storage
Ask for the folded dimensions, not only the cooking width or open height. Include the lid, legs, side tables, wheels, and any parts that need to be removed for storage. If the manufacturer does not publish a folded measurement, contact the seller or measure a display unit rather than assuming that “portable” means it will fit your storage space.
Match cooking area and heat control to your meal
Start with the cooking surface and how it is divided. A larger single surface may suit cooking one kind of food at a time; separately controlled sides can help when different foods need different heat. nomadiQ says its two cooking sides are independently controlled, but that feature alone does not establish temperature evenness or searing performance.

- Foldable & Portable: This heavy duty over fire camp grill boasts a foldable design and comes with a storage bag that is both wearable and beautiful to carry and protect the grill, making it easy to transport anywhere. It can be folded into 11.2"x11.2"x1.2" in 5 seconds, which is 10 lbs weight only.

- Grill & Griddle: This over fire camp grill is designed as half grill net and half frying plate. You can choose different cooking methods for other ingredients. And it can also be used as a cutting board, multi-purpose, and is very good for outdoor use.
- Diamond-Shaped Mesh: The folding campfire grill for the fire pit is designed with a high-density mesh grill, which can transfer heat efficiently and distributes heat evenly. You won't worry about dropping food if you want to cook bacon, eggs, toast, steaks, pancakes, sausages, or even pineapple slices.
- Multi-Purpose Use: Designed for outdoor cookware, frying pans, skillets, and pots, for cooking over an open fire. Widely used outdoors such as camping, hiking, picnic, traveling, backpacking, climbing, fishing, and other outdoor activities.
Think through a typical meal: how much food needs to cook at once, whether items require different temperatures, and whether the grill can accommodate them without crowding. For objective comparison, look for evidence on heating and searing, temperature control and evenness, wind resistance, and usable layout—not just a headline area figure.

Propane for quick setup
Propane is often the convenient choice for portable cooking because it avoids building a charcoal fire. But the fuel supply is part of the setup: check whether the grill requires a specific canister, an adapter, or another connection, and whether that supply is available and permitted at your destination. nomadiQ states that propane is sold separately for its grill.

Charcoal for smoky flavor
Weber describes charcoal as a source of smoky flavor and gas as a choice for speed and convenience. Charcoal is not permitted everywhere, particularly when local fire conditions or venue rules restrict open flames. Check both the grill’s manual and the rules for the specific campsite, park, beach, or tailgate location before packing fuel.
Set up, clean, and transport the grill safely
- Check the venue rules. Cook only where grills and your chosen fuel are permitted; restrictions can vary by location and conditions.
- Choose a safe position. Set the grill on a flat, nonflammable surface with ventilation. Keep it clear of tents and tall grass, and place it where it is unlikely to tip.
- Secure it in the vehicle. Prevent the grill from shifting or tipping during travel. Follow the grill maker’s instructions for disconnecting and safely storing gas canisters; do not assume a connected canister is safe to transport.
- Let it cool completely. Wait until the grill is fully cool before cleaning or packing it. Clean it according to the model’s manual, especially before folding parts against the cooking surfaces.
Weber’s portable-grill guidance covers permitted cooking areas, placement, cooling, vehicle security, and gas-canister handling. For the exact grill you own, follow its manual and applicable local rules. Weber’s portable-grill guidance.

OutdoorGearLab says it tested 21 portable grills in a review updated October 1, 2026. It names the larger Weber Traveler its best overall and flags that model’s 49-pound transport weight and large folded footprint as drawbacks. Those findings apply to the larger Traveler, not the 37-pound Traveler Compact, and should not be treated as a direct test of every folding grill listed here. The review’s comparison criteria include heating and searing, temperature control and evenness, portability, cooking capacity and layout, and wind resistance. OutdoorGearLab’s portable grill review.
In that review, editor and tester Trish Matheny praised the larger Traveler as “the most well-refined option we’ve tested.” That is her product-testing opinion, not a measurable specification or a verdict on the Traveler Compact.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Will you carry the grill by hand or roll it from a vehicle?
- What are its packed weight and folded dimensions, and will it fit through your trunk opening?
- Is the cooking surface large enough for your usual meal, and would separate heat controls help?
- Can you obtain the right fuel, and is it allowed at your destination?
- Can you set the grill on a stable, nonflammable surface away from tents and other hazards?
- Does the manufacturer explain how to secure the grill and transport its fuel safely?
