The best foam mat depends on what you’ll do on it. A thin yoga or exercise mat favors balance and portability; a thick gymnastics mat is built for impact training and landing. Compare thickness, foam construction, grip, size and care instructions for the intended activity—not just the word “foam” or a density figure.
Start with the activity
“Foam mat” covers products with very different jobs. Yoga and Pilates mats are relatively thin surfaces for floor work and balance. Gymnastics mats are thicker and larger, with constructions intended for training or absorbing impact. Interlocking foam tiles are another category, generally used to cover a floor rather than serve as a portable exercise mat.
A gymnastics landing mat is not a more protective substitute for a yoga mat in every situation: its thickness and cushioning can make standing balance work feel different. First decide whether you need grip and stability for poses, a convenient surface for floor exercises, or cushioning for a specific gymnastics activity.
Understand foam, density and firmness
Density is not a firmness rating
Density describes the mass of foam in a given volume and can help indicate durability and support. It does not tell you directly how firm the foam will feel. The U.S. Gymnastics Suppliers Association (USGSA) distinguishes density from IFD (Indentation Force Deflection), a firmness measure based on compressing a foam sample by 25 percent of its original height. High-density foam can be soft, and low-density foam can be firm. USGSA’s explanation of gymnastics mat foam says higher polymer density can help foam retain its original properties and intended support and comfort; read that as a durability-related point, not a guarantee of firmness.

Polyethylene and polyurethane serve different purposes
USGSA describes polyethylene as resilient, closed-cell foam that returns energy. It is used in constructions such as carpet-bonded and folding gymnastics mats. Polyurethane is described as softer, open-cell foam that absorbs energy over time and space. Some mats combine foam types. These broad material descriptions do not establish how a particular product will feel; construction, cover and intended use matter too.
Compare mat types and published specifications
The examples below illustrate how different these products can be. Specifications and intended-use descriptions come from the named manufacturers or sellers; they are not independent comfort tests or proof that one mat is best.

The listed thicknesses range from millimeters for exercise mats to many centimeters for gymnastics mats. They are product specifications, not controlled evidence that thicker is always more comfortable or appropriate. Match thickness to the movement and stability you need.
Check these details before choosing
- Activity and impact: Confirm that the mat is designed for your use. Do not assume a general exercise mat is suitable for gymnastics landings.
- Thickness and feel: More cushioning may suit floor work or impact training, while a thinner, firmer surface may feel more stable for balance poses. Try the mat if possible, since published thickness alone does not predict comfort.
- Grip: Look at both the top surface and underside. If you will use the mat on hardwood, check for a stated non-slip underside and consider whether the surface suits your movement; the specification is not a guarantee against slipping on every floor.
- Foam and cover: Check whether the mat uses open- or closed-cell foam, what covers it, and whether the construction is intended for frequent cleaning or impact training.
- Size and storage: Compare dimensions with the space and movements you need to accommodate. For bulky gymnastics mats, confirm how they fold or store and whether custom sizes are available.
- Care and durability: Follow the maker’s cleaning instructions. Treat material durability statements as claims from that maker or seller, not independent comparisons.
- Warranty and cost: Confirm current warranty coverage, price and availability with the seller; those details can change.
How to make the final choice
- Write down the main activity and whether you need balance, floor cushioning or impact absorption.
- Shortlist only mats made for that activity, then compare thickness, material, cover and stated firmness or IFD if disclosed.
- Check the surface and underside for grip, and confirm the full dimensions fit your use and storage space.
- Read the current cleaning instructions, warranty and seller specifications before purchase.
There is no universal winner established by the available specifications: they do not include independent, head-to-head comfort testing. Choose for the activity and desired balance of stability and cushioning, and verify the details for the specific mat you plan to buy.
