The right outdoor patio heater depends first on the power source available and where the unit can be safely installed or placed. Portable propane suits flexible layouts; natural gas is an option when a suitable fixed connection can be installed; electric infrared requires appropriate electrical access and a compliant mounting or freestanding position. No single type is best for every patio, and a heater’s safe use under a roof or cover must be confirmed in its own instructions.
Choose a heater type that fits your patio
Outdoor patio heaters commonly use propane, natural gas, or electricity. Compare them by the access and placement your project allows—not by category alone. The guidance below describes general tradeoffs, not a ranking of specific products. Consumer Reports outlines the three fuel categories; check the exact model’s specifications before buying or installing.
| Type | Best fit | Tradeoffs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Portable propane | A patio where you want to position the heater without a fixed gas line or a dedicated electrical mounting point. | You must handle and replace the cylinder, follow the model’s connection and lighting instructions, and meet its clearances. Never move the heater while it is operating. Propane Education & Research Council |
| Natural gas | A location with a suitable gas connection and a feasible installation that meets the heater’s instructions. | The installation and location are fixed by the connection and applicable requirements. Verify the exact unit’s connection and installation instructions. Dimplex |
| Electric infrared | A patio with suitable electrical access and an appropriate wall, ceiling, or freestanding position. | Plan around electrical access, mounting, useful heating footprint, airflow, and the manufacturer’s required clearances. Use the heater only as its instructions permit. Consumer Reports |
Match the heater to the space and the way you use it
Measure the area where people will sit, eat, or work, then consider how exposed it is. A broad square-foot estimate is only a planning aid: wind, layout, mounting position, heater output, and expectations all affect comfort. A windbreak may help with exposure, but it does not replace choosing a heater suited to the setting. Schwank/Amantii discusses windbreaks as part of selection guidance.
Lowe’s gives a covered-patio planning estimate of one heater for every 1,500 to 2,000 square feet; the page’s publication year is not shown in its search-result metadata. The Home Depot offers a similar estimate. Treat these as retailer guidance, not a heating standard or promise of performance: a patio’s shape, wind, model, mounting, and desired comfort can change what works. Lowe’s · The Home Depot

- EASY TO USE AND MOVE: One-touch ignition button for quick start ups; wheels for maneuvering into place
- POWERFUL HEAT: 46,000 BTUs for heating up to a 9 foot radius; adjustable temperature knob for controlling the output

Where you cannot mount a heater safely or protect it from wind, the nominal coverage figure is less useful than the actual seating area and installation constraints. For a permanent installation, settle the location and fuel or electrical access before selecting a model.
Compare actual models on the details that affect the job
Once you have narrowed the type, compare products intended for the same setting. Useful criteria include:
- Heat output and useful coverage: look for performance information relevant to your intended outdoor setting; do not assume a published area figure guarantees comfort.
- Fuel or power access: confirm connection, supply, and placement requirements for the exact model.
- Location suitability: check wind exposure, overhead restrictions, and whether the instructions allow the intended covered or open-air use.
- Portable versus fixed: account for cylinder handling or installation constraints, along with the location where people need heat.
- Stability and safety controls: review the model’s warnings and features rather than relying on category-level assumptions.
- Setup and upkeep: understand assembly, controls, cleaning, and any specified replacement parts.
- Current price and availability: verify these when purchasing; historical reviews and catalogs do not establish present listings.

Check placement, clearance, and covered-patio rules
Do not assume a heater is safe beneath any roof, porch, or awning. Before installation or use, confirm the exact model’s stated indoor or outdoor use, overhead clearance, ventilation and airflow needs, mounting requirements, and restrictions for covered spaces. Electric heaters also need the airflow and clearance from combustible materials specified by their manufacturer; the fact that they do not burn fuel does not remove those requirements. Consumer Reports
For propane equipment, follow the unit’s own instructions for connecting the cylinder and lighting the heater. The Propane Education & Research Council warns: “Relocating a propane outdoor heater or portable patio heater while it is in use can create a potentially unsafe situation.” Let the unit cool and follow its manual before repositioning or handling it. Propane Education & Research Council
Use only the hose and regulator assembly specified for the exact heater when replacement is needed. A manufacturer’s manual also warns that items stored beneath a heater can be exposed to intense heat; keep the area under the unit clear as instructed. Owner manual

What the 2021 title does—and does not—establish
A 2021 product roundup cannot, by itself, show that a heater remains available, that its specifications or instructions are unchanged, or that it is the best option now. Manufacturer materials such as Dimplex’s 2021 outdoor-heater page and Gasmate’s 2021 catalog provide historical product context, not proof of a current winner. Dimplex · Gasmate
