OSHA requires permanent, conspicuous “DANGER – HIGH VOLTAGE – KEEP OUT” signs at certain entrances for exposed live parts over 600 volts nominal, and separate attached, plainly visible labels for specified equipment over 250 volts AC or DC. A sign is one part of hazard control—not proof by itself that a workplace complies.
Where do high-voltage signs need to be posted?
OSHA’s general-industry electrical rules address several different situations. The thresholds and placement requirements are not interchangeable.
Entrances to locations with exposed live parts over 600 volts
Under 29 CFR 1910.303(h)(5)(iii)(B), entrances to buildings, rooms, or enclosures containing exposed live parts or exposed conductors operating over 600 volts nominal must have permanent, conspicuous warning signs reading substantially “DANGER – HIGH VOLTAGE – KEEP OUT.” The rule also requires those entrances to remain locked unless a qualified person is present and observes them at all times.
Equipment over 250 volts AC or DC
A separate provision, 29 CFR 1910.306(g)(1)(ii), applies to specified equipment over 250 volts AC or DC. It requires the warning label or sign to be attached to the equipment and plainly visible where a person might contact energized parts when doors are opened or closed or panels are removed. This equipment-surface requirement is distinct from the over-600-volt entrance rule.

Other guarded rooms and electrical hazards
Section 1910.303 also requires conspicuous signs forbidding unqualified persons to enter certain rooms and guarded locations containing exposed live parts in its provision for installations at 600 volts nominal or less. Separately, 29 CFR 1910.335 requires electrical hazard signs, symbols, or accident-prevention tags where necessary to warn employees about hazards that may endanger them. If signs and barricades are not enough to protect employees, an attendant may be required.
What does a high-voltage warning sign need to say?
For the two specific conditions above, OSHA calls for wording substantially equivalent to “DANGER – HIGH VOLTAGE – KEEP OUT.” A different generic electrical-hazard message may not communicate the required warning for those cases.

“Permanent and conspicuous warning signs shall be provided, reading substantially as follows: ‘DANGER – HIGH VOLTAGE – KEEP OUT.’”
This is the wording in OSHA 1910.303(h)(5)(iii)(B). For equipment covered by 1910.306(g)(1)(ii), the specified wording is the same, but the sign or label must be attached to the equipment and visible at the relevant exposure point.

Choose the signal word for the hazard
OSHA 1910.145 distinguishes a danger sign, used for an immediate danger, from a caution sign, used for a potential hazard or unsafe practice. Do not substitute a signal word for a specific required message. OSHA also requires employees to be instructed in the meaning of signs.

- RFLECTIVE FONT- Our reflective signs illuminate when struck by light from headlights or any other source. This makes the message readable even in dark and low lighting.
- EASY INSTALLATION: Danger High Voltage Sign have four 3/16 inchpre-punched holes Mount with screws, nails, tie-wraps or wires Signs can also be attached with foam or double-sided velcro tape Sign attachment accessories are not included.
- HIGH QUALITY ALUMINUM: Made with Heavy-duty, rust-free 0.40(1mm) aluminum for indoor and all-weather outdoor use.
- LONG OUTDOOR LIFE: Long lasting ink and UV coating made our safety notice sign fade-resistant and durable. The graphics and paint can withstand various factors outside, ensuring that it will not fade in 8 years.
- Match placement to the rule. An entrance sign, a warning on guarded access, and a label on equipment serve different situations. For equipment covered by 1910.306, visibility matters when doors are opened or closed or panels are removed.
- Make required signs permanent and conspicuous. This is the standard for the over-600-volt entrance condition. For equipment labels under 1910.306, ensure the label is attached and plainly visible at the possible contact point.
- Account for the environment. Electrical equipment ratings and markings must be suitable for the environment involved under 1910.303. Consider moisture, heat, sunlight, chemicals, cleaning, and surface condition before choosing an adhesive label or rigid plate. The cited provisions do not prescribe one universal sign substrate or mounting method.
- Keep text readable to the people exposed. OSHA’s tag rule includes a criterion that signal words be readable from at least five feet, or farther as the hazard warrants, and that messages be understandable to exposed employees. That is a tag criterion, not a universal lettering-distance rule for every sign.
- Check the applicable sign standard carefully. ANSI’s catalog lists Z535.2-2023 for environmental and facility safety signs, Z535.3-2022 for safety symbols, and Z535.4-2023 for product safety signs and labels. Consult the full standard and applicable regulations before claiming conformity.
When comparing a high-voltage danger sign or electrical hazard warning label, verify the exact text, placement, attachment, visibility, and environmental suitability for the installation. Have a qualified electrical-safety professional confirm site-specific requirements; buying a sign alone does not establish compliance.
What this guidance covers—and what it does not
The requirements described here are U.S. OSHA general-industry provisions in 29 CFR Part 1910. They do not establish one rule for every high-voltage area. Construction work, state-plan jurisdictions, utility-specific rules, local codes, NFPA 70E, and equipment-specific requirements may add or change obligations; assess the rules applicable to the actual worksite.
