The best HSS jointer knives are the ones that match your jointer’s cutterhead and exact replacement dimensions. An 8-inch cutting length alone does not establish fit: Grizzly lists two different 8-inch knife sets, and its compatibility guidance says model, manufacture date and serial range can matter.
How to choose replacement HSS jointer knives
Start with the machine and cutterhead, not a brand ranking. Compare the replacement knives with the original set and confirm the machine documentation before ordering.
- Identify the cutterhead. Determine whether the machine has straight knives or an upgraded spiral or helical head. A knife set for an original cutterhead is not interchangeable with inserts for an upgraded head.
- Confirm the jointer’s model and production details. Grizzly says fit may depend on model number, manufacture date and serial range. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance and your machine documentation.
- Match every knife dimension and the set count. Check length, width, thickness and number of knives—not just the jointer’s nominal width or the knife length.

For a precise replacement, treat the original cutterhead and machine-specific fit information as decisive. If the knife dimensions, cutterhead type or serial/date fit remain uncertain, ask the manufacturer to confirm compatibility rather than relying on “8-inch” as the only match.

- Machine make and exact model, plus manufacture date or serial range if the manufacturer uses them for fit.
- Whether the installed cutterhead takes straight knives or inserts for a spiral/helical upgrade.
