The right breakfast tray depends on where you’ll use it and what you expect it to do. For breakfast in bed, compare leg height and clearance; for a sofa or table, check the tray’s footprint and height against the surface. How to choose a breakfast tray
Start with the surface and clearance
Measure the space where the tray will sit, then compare it with the tray’s open dimensions. A bed tray needs enough clearance for its legs and a footprint that fits comfortably over the mattress. On a sofa or table, the same height may feel unsuitable, so check the dimensions against your actual setup rather than assuming bed trays have a standard size.
For reference, IKEA lists its RESGODS at 20½ by 11½ inches and 10 inches high. Lipper’s folding-leg model measures 19.75 by 12 inches open and 9.5 inches high. These are manufacturer-listed dimensions, not a recommendation that either will fit every bed or sofa.
Consider what you’ll carry
Handles can make a tray easier to carry, while raised sides provide a boundary around items. Lipper’s tray has handle cutouts and high side walls. Those are design features, not a guarantee against spills or tipping; carry food and drinks with care.

Check storage dimensions
If you have limited cupboard or under-bed space, compare the closed dimensions rather than just the open footprint. Lipper lists its tray as 19.75 by 12 by 2.375 inches when closed. Totally Bamboo says its model folds to 2⅜ inches deep. Confirm the full closed size where available before choosing a storage spot.
Decide whether you want an adjustable top
A conventional folding-leg breakfast tray has a flat surface. Foppapedretti’s beechwood design instead has a top that tilts into several positions and can be used as a lectern, with foldaway supports. That format may suit someone who also wants to prop up a book or tablet; compare its height and footprint with your intended seat and surface.
