For most natural-stone floors and surfaces, choose a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or mild liquid dishwashing detergent diluted in warm water. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Avoid acidic cleaners—especially on marble and limestone—and abrasive powders or creams that could scratch the finish. The Natural Stone Institute recommends these care practices; it does not rank brands or identify a tested best product.

How to choose a cleaner for natural stone

Identify the stone first

Stone composition affects cleaner choice. Calcareous stones, including marble and limestone, are mainly calcium carbonate and can be etched or dulled by acidic solutions such as vinegar or lemon juice. Siliceous stones are generally more resistant to acids, but may contain acid-sensitive minerals. The Natural Stone Institute advises avoiding acidic cleaners as a general practice. If you do not know the stone, finish, or treatment, check with the stone supplier before using a new product. Look for a suitable label, not a “winner” claim

Check that the label names your stone type and intended surface, and follow its dilution, application, and rinse directions. A neutral-pH or “safe for stone” label describes the maker’s product; it is not independent proof that the cleaner outperforms alternatives. The available manufacturer descriptions support the products below as examples for routine care, not as a tested ranking.

Option What the source says Practical check
STONETECH Stone & Tile Cleaner LATICRETE describes it as a neutral-pH daily cleaner for everyday spills, dirt, and grease. Listed substrates include marble, granite, quartzite, limestone, travertine, slate, sandstone, flagstone, masonry, concrete, ceramic and porcelain tile, quartz, and grout. Ready-to-use and concentrate formats are listed; the page specifies the United States and Canada. Confirm that the current local label covers your stone and choose the format and directions that suit the job. Product information.
Aqua Mix Concentrated Stone & Tile Cleaner The manufacturer describes a neutral-pH routine cleaner for polished and unpolished natural stone, including granite, limestone, marble, slate, and travertine. Its Australian product page gives a dilution of 1–4 oz per gallon of water and says 1 oz per gallon is usually sufficient for polished stone. This is an Australian-region page; verify local availability and use the directions on the label where you buy it. Product information.
Mild dishwashing detergent and warm water The Natural Stone Institute explicitly recommends this as a routine-cleaning option. No product-specific dilution is stated. Use a modest amount, rinse thoroughly, and dry; adding more detergent can leave residue.

No comparative cleaning results, value comparison, or independent product testing are established for these options.

How to clean a stone floor routinely

  1. Remove grit first. Dust-mop frequently with a clean, non-treated dry mop. Dirt and sand can abrade stone. For floors, the Natural Stone Institute recommends a clean rag mop; worn vacuum wheels or attachments may scratch some surfaces.
  2. Mix and apply the cleaner. Use a neutral stone cleaner, stone soap, or mild liquid dishwashing detergent in warm water. Follow the product maker’s concentration; excess cleaner can leave film or streaks.
  3. Rinse well. Use clean water and change it frequently so you do not spread dirty solution or cleaner residue across the floor.
  4. Dry the surface. Wipe with a soft cloth to reduce streaks and standing water.

The Institute’s concise guidance is: “Clean stone surfaces with a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or a mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water.” Source and full care guidance.

What to avoid

  • Acids: Avoid vinegar, lemon, and other acidic products, particularly on marble and limestone. Acid can etch or dull calcareous stone, and some siliceous stones also contain acid-sensitive minerals.
  • Abrasive cleaners: Scouring powders and creams may scratch some stone or its finish.
  • Residue from too much soap: Do not respond to streaks by adding more detergent. Use the recommended concentration, rinse thoroughly, and dry.
  • Dangerous chemical mixing: Never mix ammonia and bleach; the Natural Stone Institute warns that this combination creates toxic, potentially lethal gas.

How to handle spills, stains, and sealing

For a fresh spill

For a stain that remains

Identify the stain type before choosing a treatment; different stains may require different approaches. A poultice or professional advice may be appropriate for a deep or stubborn stain. A routine cleaner should not be expected to remove every stain, and etching or other surface damage may require professional restoration. Natural Stone Institute: Stains.

For sealing questions

Impregnating treatments can make stone more stain resistant, but they do not make it stain proof. Whether sealing is appropriate depends on the stone and its use, so ask the supplier or sealer manufacturer about the specific surface. Natural Stone Institute: Care & Cleaning of Natural Stone.
