Best Circular Saw Blades for LVL: A Manufacturer-Listed Option and What to Check

Milwaukee’s 7-1/4-inch, 24-tooth framing blade is listed for LVL, but fit depends on your saw. Learn what to verify and why the listing does not prove universal performance or value.

Milwaukee lists its 7-1/4-inch, 24-tooth framing blade, model 48-40-0720, for LVL. It is a concrete option if your saw accepts the blade’s diameter, 5/8-inch arbor with diamond knockout, and kerf. That listing is not an independent performance test or proof that it is the best-value or most precise blade for every LVL cut.

Which circular saw blade is listed for LVL?

Milwaukee specifies its 7-1/4-inch, 24-tooth framing blade (model 48-40-0720) for softwoods, hardwoods, plywood, OSB, LVL, PSL, LSL, and OSL. The product page describes carbide teeth, a thin kerf, and diamond venting. These are manufacturer specifications and feature claims, not comparative test results. Milwaukee 48-40-0720 product details.

Milwaukee markets this 24-tooth blade for fast cuts. It is a framing blade, so do not assume the listing promises a finish-grade surface. If appearance or a particularly clean edge matters, check the blade maker’s guidance for that task and material; the available product information does not establish its finish quality on LVL.

Check compatibility before buying

A blade that is listed for LVL still has to match the saw. Check the saw manual and the blade specifications for diameter, arbor, and kerf, and use only blades recommended for the tool. The Milwaukee 48-40-0720 is 7-1/4 inches and has a 5/8-inch arbor with a diamond knockout. Do not assume it fits a saw merely because the diameter matches.

What about a thicker-kerf alternative?

Milwaukee also lists its 6-1/2-inch, 24-tooth thick-kerf framing blade for LVL. The company describes it as designed for straight rip cuts and stability. It is a different size and kerf from the 7-1/4-inch example, and is suitable only for saws designed for those specifications. Milwaukee’s description is not an independent measurement of stability or cut quality. Milwaukee 6-1/2-inch thick-kerf blade details.

How to choose for the cut you need

  • Start with the saw: Confirm blade diameter, arbor, kerf, and the saw maker’s recommendations in the manual.
  • Check the material listing: Prefer a product page that explicitly names LVL or otherwise clearly covers the material; do not assume every wood blade is equivalent.
  • Match the blade to the task: A framing blade is intended for framing cuts. Manufacturer language about speed or stability is not proof of finish quality or independently measured performance.
  • Compare price only with current information: The cited product specifications do not establish current prices or best value. Check sellers for current availability and price, then compare compatible blades with the same task in mind.

For example, DEWALT’s UK product page describes a 216 mm, 24-tooth Extreme 2 Life blade for stationary saws and lists hardwood, wood, plywood, MDF, and chipboard—but does not specifically identify LVL. That page alone does not verify it as an LVL choice. DEWALT UK product details.

Cutting LVL: distinguish trimming from structural modifications

Cutting an LVL member to length at the jobsite is different from notching, tapering, or drilling it. The Canadian Wood Council says LVL can be cut to length and advises: “All special cutting, notching or drilling should be done in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.” Canadian Wood Council LVL guidance.

APA’s technical note, revised February 1, 2020, recommends avoiding field modifications such as notching, tapering, or drilling when they are not shown on design or shop drawings. This guidance concerns structural modifications, not the choice of blade for an otherwise permitted cut to length. Check the project drawings and LVL manufacturer’s instructions before altering a structural member. APA technical note on LVL field modifications.

Cut safely with the saw manual for your tool

Follow the operating instructions for the actual saw, including its blade-selection and workpiece-support guidance. Hilti’s SCW 70 instructions warn that a twisted or misaligned blade can climb out of the kerf and kick back; they also advise clearing obstructions above and below the workpiece and using a blade suitable for the material and recommended for the saw.
