The best safety latch is one that fits the cabinet or drawer, can be installed as directed, and is used again every time it is opened. Safety latches help keep children away from household hazards; they do not secure an entire home or guarantee that a determined toddler cannot get through. Choose a device for the specific hazard and location.
What safety latches are for
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends safety latches and locks on cabinets and drawers to help keep children from reaching medicines, laundry detergent, household cleaners, matches, cigarette lighters, knives, and other sharp objects. A cabinet or drawer latch is a targeted barrier for stored hazards—not a substitute for safe storage or supervision.
CPSC’s guidance is: “Look for safety latches and locks that adults can easily install and use, but are sturdy enough to withstand pulls and tugs from children.” The right fit and installation depend on the latch and the cabinet or drawer, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Choose a device for the hazard

How to compare cabinet and drawer latches
- Compatibility: Check that the device is intended for the cabinet door or drawer and can be fitted to its construction. Do not assume one latch works on every cabinet.
- Installation: Confirm that you can follow the maker’s instructions for the location and attachment method. A latch that is incorrectly installed may not work as intended.
- Adult operation: Choose a latch adults in the household can operate easily, then make sure it is re-engaged after each use.
- Child resistance: Review the manufacturer’s description, but treat the latch as a risk-reduction layer rather than a guarantee.
- Safety information: Look for applicable standard information and check recall records for the specific product. CPSC identifies ASTM F3492-21 as the voluntary standard for child safety locks and latches used with cabinet doors and drawers. Install, use, and maintain the latch
- Identify the cabinet or drawer containing a hazard and select a latch intended for that type of opening.
- Read the manufacturer’s installation instructions and confirm the latch can be mounted as directed on that cabinet or drawer.
- Install it as instructed, then operate it yourself to confirm it engages and releases as intended.
- Re-engage the latch after every use. CPSC warns that safety devices must be properly installed and reengaged, and that determined toddlers may overcome or disable them.
- Check the latch periodically for damage, loosening, or failure to engage; follow the manufacturer’s directions for care or replacement.
Why recall checks matter
A CPSC recall record documents cabinet swing locks that could fail to prevent child access. That is a reason to check the specific product’s recall status and not rely on a latch alone; it does not show that every latch type or current product is unreliable. For a practical choice, favor a cabinet or drawer device that fits the opening, can be installed according to its instructions, is easy for adults in the home to use, and has clear safety and recall information.
