The best memory foam lumbar pillow is the one that fits your seat and the way you use it. Compact cushions suit many office chairs and other seats; larger backrest pillows are intended for lounging or reading in bed. Compare dimensions, profile, cover care and how the pillow stays in place before choosing. Product specifications describe design and materials, not proof that a pillow treats or prevents back pain.
Choose a pillow for the place you will use it
A compact lumbar cushion can fill the space between your lower back and a chair. Some models are also designed for extended sitting in different settings. A large backrest pillow has a different purpose: it supports a broader area while you sit or lounge, including in bed.
- Office chair or other seat: Look for a compact cushion whose height and thickness fit the chair and your back. A strap may help keep it positioned.
- Lounging or reading in bed: Consider a larger backrest pillow if you want broader support than a small cushion provides.
- Specific chair model: Check compatibility rather than assuming a pillow fits every chair. AndaSeat says its Novis L/XL pillows are designed for the Novis L chair; verify the current size and chair version before buying.
For examples of these different uses, AndaSeat describes its Novis pillows as filling the gap between the lower back and chair, Tempur-Pedic positions its LumbarCushion for mid- and lower-back support during extended sitting, and Casper describes its Backrest Pillow for sitting and lounging, including reading in bed.

Check fit, shape and firmness before buying
Measure the space between your back and the seat, and consider whether the chair has a pronounced curve or a flat back. A cushion that is too thick may push you forward; one that is too small may not sit where you need it. The product examples range from a 15 × 15 × 4-inch cushion to a 24 × 24 × 12-inch backrest pillow, reflecting different uses rather than a simple scale of better to worse.
Shape and firmness are personal preferences, and the listed specifications alone cannot tell you how a pillow will feel. Where possible, check product details for a clear profile and foam description, and review the seller’s current return terms before ordering. Consider heat, attachment and cleaning
Memory foam may retain more heat than some other materials, according to Healthline’s general selection guidance. A product’s cooling feature is a design attribute, not a guarantee that every user will feel cooler. Wagan lists gel pods on the RelaxFusion cushion; check whether its shape and strap also suit your seat. Healthline’s guide discusses material and selection considerations.
Care instructions differ by product. Casper specifies washing the removable cover cold on a delicate cycle and drying it flat, while warning not to wash the foam. Tempur-Pedic says its cover is removable and washable. Wagan lists a removable washable mesh cover. Follow the instructions for the specific pillow rather than washing its foam core.
