IKEA Estonia lists one kneeling chair: the EIFRED, product number 905.270.69, priced at €99 on the regional product page. That listing does not establish availability at IKEA in other countries. Whether it is the right chair depends on your body and desk fit, comfort at the shin pads, and whether you want back support or a rocking seat. Current evidence does not show that a kneeling chair reliably improves posture or prevents or treats back pain.
What IKEA kneeling chair is listed?
The verified IKEA option is the EIFRED kneeling chair in Gunnared black-grey. IKEA Estonia lists it at €99, with dimensions of 66 cm long × 45 cm wide × 67 cm high and a maximum load of 110 kg. Its castors are designed for hard floors. These are details from the Estonia listing; price and availability can vary by market and change over time. Check your local IKEA site for current stock and specifications.
IKEA describes the chair this way: “The kneeling chair reduces lower back strain by dividing weight between your knees and seat.” That is IKEA’s product claim, not a clinical finding that the chair reduces pain. See the IKEA Estonia EIFRED product page.
How to decide whether a kneeling chair fits your desk and body
A chair can be uncomfortable even if its design looks suitable on paper. Check how it works with your desk and workstation, and try it if possible. Pay particular attention to whether you can sit without uncomfortable pressure on your shins and whether the seat height and angle suit you.

- Support and movement: Decide whether you want a backrest, adjustable cushions, a rocking design, or selectable seat angles.
- Practical limits: Check dimensions and maximum load, then verify price, local availability, return options, and warranty in your market.
Varier’s guidance for the Variable gives a general user-height range of 150–205 cm and a tested load up to 110 kg. Treat these as that model’s specifications and guidance, not proof of fit for every user; confirm the local product details before buying. Varier Variable product page.

What evidence says about posture and back pain
Design intent and health outcomes are different questions. The studies cited here are small and do not establish that a kneeling chair prevents back pain, treats it, or guarantees better posture.

PubMed study record.
- A 2015 matched pilot study: Researchers studied 10 people with chronic nonspecific low-back pain and 10 healthy matched controls. They found a difference in lumbar curvature between kneeling-chair and usual-chair postures. That is a posture measurement, not evidence of long-term symptom relief or prevention. PubMed study record.
- Workstation guidance: The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work notes that alternative seating, including kneeling chairs, may have advantages and drawbacks and cannot be recommended universally. It emphasizes movement and duration. Ergonomics in Office Work.
How to use a kneeling chair in a workstation
General workstation guidance is to adjust the chair alongside the desk and computer setup, try different seating options, and avoid staying still in one posture for too long. OSHA recommends changing position, stretching, and periodically standing or walking. This is general workstation advice, not an endorsement of kneeling chairs or a prescription to use one continuously.
