A propane stove is suitable for indoor cooking only if it is designed and approved for indoor kitchen use and installed as its manufacturer directs. A portable propane camp stove is a different appliance: the CDC says, “Never use a portable gas camp stove indoors.” An open window or carbon monoxide (CO) alarm does not change that.
Can you use a propane camping stove indoors?
No. Do not use an outdoor-only camping stove inside a home, garage, camper, or other enclosed space. The CDC’s guidance is explicit: never use a portable gas camp stove indoors. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency likewise warns against using unvented combustion appliances, including camp stoves, indoors.
Propane is a fuel, not an indoor-use rating. A portable camp stove and a permanent kitchen range may both burn propane, but their intended use, installation and venting are not interchangeable. Coleman, for example, identifies its PowerPack as outdoor-only; its Triton+ product guidance also says outdoor use only and warns of carbon monoxide and fire risks.
How is an indoor propane range different from a camp stove?
An indoor range is a kitchen appliance specified for indoor cooking, with installation, clearances, fuel requirements and any exhaust or venting details set out by its manufacturer. A camp stove is portable equipment intended for outdoor cooking. Using the same fuel does not make the latter safe or approved for indoor operation.

- Duel Fuel - Compatible With Both Butane (Fuel Not Included) And Propane Fuel (Fuel Not Included), Operates On A Single Butane Cartridge 8 Oz Or A Propane Cylinder 16.4 Oz , Propane Converter Regulator Included
- Automatic Piezo Electric Ignition - Piezo-Electric Ignition That Eliminates The Use For Lighter/Matches In Order To Ignite Flame, No Need For Lighters Or Matches With This Stove

For power outages, EPA guidance is limited to a vented fuel-burning stove set up for cooking: it may be used if its vent does not depend on electricity. That does not authorize using an unvented camp stove indoors. Follow the specific appliance manual and applicable local requirements.
How to choose an indoor propane stove
There is no model recommendation here: the available manufacturer and public-safety material does not verify a specific indoor propane range. Before buying or installing one, confirm each item against the exact model’s current official product information and manual.

- Robust Windblocker Protection: Incorporates a heavy-duty Windblocker on all four corners of the burner head to prevent flame extinguishment by wind, guaranteeing consistent performance in various outdoor conditions.
- Indoor-use designation: Confirm that the exact appliance is designed for indoor kitchen cooking. Do not infer suitability from a propane connection, product name or appearance.
- Propane compatibility: Check whether the appliance is configured for propane as sold or requires a manufacturer-approved conversion. Follow the manual; do not improvise a conversion.
- Venting and exhaust: Identify the required venting configuration and whether any vent depends on electrical power. The EPA’s outage guidance applies only to a vented cooking appliance whose vent does not need power.
- Certification and local rules: Verify applicable certification and installation requirements in your jurisdiction. Requirements can vary by location; consult the manufacturer’s instructions and qualified local installation professionals.
- Cooking configuration: Match the number and arrangement of burners and any oven to the household’s actual cooking needs, using the specifications for the model under consideration.
- Installation and ongoing support: Check clearances, installation instructions, warranty terms, service coverage and parts availability before purchase.
Carbon monoxide alarms are backup protection
Fuel-burning appliances can create carbon monoxide, an odorless gas that can be deadly. A CO alarm provides warning; it does not make an outdoor-only stove safe indoors or replace correct appliance selection, installation, operation and maintenance.
The Propane Education & Research Council recommends CO detectors and following appliance and vent-free equipment manufacturer directions. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises installing an alarm meeting current UL 2034 requirements on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas; it recommends battery-powered alarms or models with battery backup. Use alarms as directed and maintain them according to their instructions.

What to do during a power outage
Do not bring a camp stove indoors to cook or heat a room, even temporarily. EPA says a vented fuel-burning stove set up for cooking may be used during an outage only if its vent does not need power. Check the appliance manual and follow local safety guidance; if the appliance is not explicitly designed and installed for indoor cooking, do not use it inside.
