A practical choice starts with the door’s measurements and the entry method you want, then checks the grade and exact standard cited for the specific lock. Schlage’s BE365 is a keypad deadbolt with a backup key cylinder; its B60 is a mechanical, key-operated deadbolt. Their published specifications offer concrete points of comparison, not independent performance rankings.
What to check before choosing a front-door lock
- Grade and standard: Look for the grade and ANSI/BHMA standard listed for the exact model. A grade is not a guarantee against every attack or a substitute for correct installation.
- Door fit: Measure door thickness and backset, and confirm that the door is prepared for the lock type. Backset is the distance from the door edge to the center of the bore.
- Entry method: Decide whether keypad access, a physical key, or both suit the household. For a keypad model, check code capacity and how the lock is powered.
- Bolt and strike: Review the manufacturer’s stated bolt and strike features, and make sure the strike can be securely installed in the door frame.
For the meaning and limits of residential grades, see Schlage’s explanation of BHMA grades.
Keypad deadbolt: Schlage BE365
Schlage describes the BE365 as a keypad deadbolt for front doors. It combines keypad entry with a key cylinder on the outside and a thumbturn on the inside. Schlage lists capacity for up to 19 access codes, two preset four-digit codes, and one 9V battery. The specifications list doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick and a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. Check the current model documentation and measure your door before buying or installing.
Schlage lists the BE365 to ANSI/BHMA A156.40-2015 and A156.36-2010. Those are the standards cited for this model; they should not be treated as a universal ranking against other locks. See Schlage’s BE365 product information for the manufacturer’s specifications.

What BHMA residential grades tell you
Schlage explains that BHMA residential door-hardware grading evaluates security, durability, and finish. In its summary, security includes resistance to forces such as impact, pulling, and weight; durability concerns continued function through repeated use and changes in door fit; finish covers wear from environmental exposure and scratching. Schlage describes A as best within a category, with AAA representing the best possible grade across all three categories. A grade is tied to specified performance dimensions and standards; it does not certify a particular lock installation against every method of attack.

When a keypad lever may be an alternative
ASSA ABLOY New Zealand describes its Yale Assure Lock Lever Keyed as a keypad lever for single-hole doors and lists optional connectivity hardware and Grade A to ANSI/BHMA A156.39. It is a lever lock, not a deadbolt, so it is not a direct substitute when you need a deadbolt. - Measure first. Confirm door thickness and backset, then check bore and existing preparation against the manufacturer’s fitting instructions.
- Choose the access method. A keypad deadbolt offers code entry alongside a key cylinder; a mechanical deadbolt avoids keypad code management and battery power.
- Compare the exact model’s documentation. Match its grade and named standard, and review stated bolt and strike features without treating marketing specifications as comparative test results.
- Check the frame and installation. A reinforced strike is useful only when installed as intended in a suitable frame. Follow the model instructions, and consult a qualified installer if the door or frame needs modification.
