There is no single best length for every project. DEWALT and SENCO describe these pins for small or decorative trim, miter returns, and similar finishing work; those are manufacturer-stated applications, not independent performance tests.
What are pinner nails?
Pinner nails are typically 23-gauge, headless fasteners, also called micro pins. SENCO calls its straight-strip products “micro pins.” Their small profile is intended for situations where a conspicuous nail head would detract from the finish. DEWALT says its headless pins keep visibility to a minimum, while SENCO describes a nearly invisible hole. Those descriptions are not guarantees: the mark can vary with the wood, finish, and installation.
Manufacturers list small and decorative molding, fine trim, and miter returns among the intended uses. A pin nail is a finishing fastener, not a universal substitute for a structurally rated connection. The cited product pages do not establish holding-strength measurements for comparing pins or prove that they are adequate for every joint.
How to choose the right collated pin nails
1. Match gauge and collation to the nailer
Start with the exact nailer model’s specifications. Confirm that it accepts 23-gauge pins and the same collation or strip style as the fasteners you plan to buy. A pin can be the correct gauge and still be incompatible if its collation differs from the tool’s requirements.

For example, SENCO lists one 23-gauge pin nailer for 1/2–1-3/8-inch fasteners and another example, its 1-3/8-inch nailer, for that shorter range. DEWALT specifies 5/8–2 inches for its DWFP2350K. These examples show why you should check the individual tool rather than assume all 23-gauge nailers accept the same lengths.
2. Choose a length within the tool’s range and suited to the work
First eliminate any length outside your nailer’s approved range. Then consider the material and how the pieces meet; the product sources do not establish a universally best pin length or a length-to-material formula. Follow the tool and project requirements, and avoid choosing a fastener solely because it is the longest the nailer can fire.

(Please note the compatibility of the nails with the nail gun before purchasing.)
3. Check the point and material or finish
Point design and coating are product-specific. DEWALT describes its DWPN23100 as having a chisel point intended to reduce splitting. The same product is specified for interior use only, so do not infer outdoor suitability from the word “coated.” Check the exact fastener’s intended exposure and coating before using it where moisture or weather is a factor.
4. Confirm the application and pack quantity
Compare the manufacturer’s stated use with your task, then check how many pins are in the package. The DEWALT DWPN23100 is a 1-1/2-inch, 2,000-piece pack. SENCO’s straight-strip micro-pin family lists multiple lengths and package quantities. These are examples of product options, not evidence that one brand or length is best for every finishing job.

Product examples and compatibility checks
| Product or tool | Gauge and collation | Length or range | Other stated details | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DEWALT DWPN23100 pins | 23-gauge; verify strip compatibility with your nailer | 1-1/2 inches | 2,000 per pack; chisel point; DEWALT says the point is intended to reduce splitting; interior use only | Confirm your nailer accepts 1-1/2-inch pins and the product’s collation. |
| SENCO straight-strip micro pins | 23-gauge; straight-strip collation | Multiple lengths listed by SENCO | Multiple package quantities listed; SENCO describes use for small trim and a nearly invisible hole | Match the straight-strip format and selected length to the nailer’s specifications. |
| SENCO 1-3/8-inch 23-gauge pin nailer | 23-gauge; tool’s specified collation | 1/2–1-3/8 inches | Manufacturer-listed fastener range | Do not select pins longer than 1-3/8 inches for this tool. |
| DEWALT DWFP2350K pin nailer | 23-gauge; tool’s specified collation | 5/8–2 inches | Manufacturer-listed fastener range | Check that the fastener’s length and collation are both accepted. |
Tool ranges and product specifications above are manufacturer listings accessed October 8, 2026. The DEWALT fastener page does not establish that its pins fit every 23-gauge nailer, and the cited pages do not provide a directly comparable holding-strength test.
Will 23-gauge pins fit my nailer?
Not necessarily. Verify all three details in the manual or official specifications for your exact nailer: gauge, collation, and length range. The DEWALT and SENCO examples differ in their supported length ranges, so the shared 23-gauge designation alone is not enough to confirm compatibility.

- Find the model number on the tool and consult its manufacturer specification.
- Check that the fastener is 23-gauge and uses the required collation.
- Make sure its length falls inside the stated range.
- Check the fastener’s coating and intended exposure for the installation.
When a pinner is the wrong fastening choice
Choose another fastening method when the connection needs structural holding that the pin and application have not been shown to provide. The cited manufacturer pages describe pins for fine and decorative trim but do not provide independent holding-strength results or establish suitability for every joint. For a load-bearing or otherwise critical connection, follow the project design and use a fastening method specified for that connection rather than relying on the pin’s small size or a general finishing-use description.
