Best Weed Killer That Kills Everything: How to Choose for Bare-Ground Control

“Kills everything” means non-selective control, not a product for every site. Compare the goal, allowed use, ingredients, and current label before treating.

There is no single weed killer that is best for every site. “Kills everything” usually means non-selective control: a product may damage many kinds of plants, including desirable plants it contacts. The key decision is whether you want to kill weeds that have already emerged or suppress regrowth in an appropriate non-crop area. Those goals call for different label-approved uses, and neither guarantees a permanently bare surface.

What “kills everything” means—and what it does not

Non-selective herbicides are intended to control a broad range of vegetation rather than spare particular plants. They can harm lawns, ornamentals, crops, and other desirable plants if spray reaches them. Drift matters, too: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says glyphosate “may impact non-target plants through spray drift offsite from the treatment area.” Read and follow the specific product label, including its directions for limiting drift. EPA: Glyphosate.

“Kills everything” does not tell you how long an area will stay clear. A treatment aimed at emerged foliage is not interchangeable with one that has soil activity intended to suppress regrowth. Soil type, rainfall, application amount, and other conditions can affect both the degree and duration of control; a product label, not its marketing phrase, determines where and how it may be used.

Choose by site and control goal

Start with the surface you need to clear and the result you want. A product labeled for a driveway does not automatically qualify for a lawn, planted bed, or fence line. Likewise, approval for a non-crop site does not mean it is appropriate around a home, in a play area, or near water.

RM43 Concentrated Extended Control Weed Killer
  • Concentrated mix with water, add to sprayer
  • Serious Weed Control
  • Up to one year control
  • Total Vegetation control
Need What to check Important distinction
Kill weeds already growing Whether the label covers the weeds and site, plus application and drift directions Foliar control does not by itself establish how long the area will remain free of new growth.
Keep a suitable non-crop area bare longer Whether the label permits soil-active control at that exact site and specifies any restrictions Soil activity can affect future vegetation; it is not suitable for every landscape or property.
Clear vegetation near desirable plants Label precautions and practical ability to prevent contact and drift Non-selective products may damage plants beyond the intended target.

For construction and maintenance settings, identify the precise area—such as gravel, a curb edge, or a driveway—and verify that the current label names it. Do not infer permission for a site from a product name or from another product with similar ingredients.

RM43 Total Vegetation Control

EPA’s record identifies RM43 as containing 43.68% glyphosate (isopropylamine salt) and 0.78% imazapyr (isopropylamine salt). The record lists a label accepted July 30, 2026, and includes non-crop contexts such as curbs and driveways. Check the accepted label for the complete site list and directions before considering it for a particular area; the ingredient percentages alone do not establish suitability. EPA RM43 label.

Ortho GroundClear Total Vegetation Killer

An EPA record lists 5% glyphosate-isopropylammonium and 0.08% imazapyr-isopropylamine salt, with sites including curbs, driveways, gravel, patios, sidewalks, and industrial or non-crop areas. The latest accepted-label date displayed in that record is September 27, 2011. That older record does not establish current marketing, availability, or the status of current packaging; verify the product’s current label and registration before relying on it. Non Selective Weed Killer Concentrate, EPA Reg. No. 10088-118

EPA accepted this product’s label on November 24, 2025. It identifies 1.20% lithium salt of bromacil and covers annual and perennial weeds and grasses on non-cropland. Its label says not to use the product in recreational areas or in or around homes. It also says control’s degree and duration vary with application amount, soil type, rainfall, and other conditions. This is a narrowly site-limited example, not a general-purpose recommendation. EPA bromacil label.

Verify the exact label before treating

The EPA Pesticide Product and Label System (PPLS) lets users search by product or alternate brand name, active ingredient, company, or registration number. EPA describes the system as containing more than 170,000 current and historical text-searchable labels. Use the current product record and read the label itself for allowed sites, target vegetation, application directions, protective equipment, re-entry restrictions, and environmental precautions. 1. Identify the exact area and nearby features, including desirable plants, drains, surface water, and places people or animals use.
  2. Find the product’s EPA registration record by product name or registration number, then open the most current accepted label.
  3. Confirm that the label permits use at that exact site and addresses the vegetation and control goal you have.
  4. Follow the label’s application rate, protective equipment, drift precautions, water protections, and re-entry directions. Do not substitute instructions from another product.

Safety, drift, and environmental precautions

Keep treatment inside the intended area. EPA notes that glyphosate labels include drift-mitigation requirements, and its glyphosate page warns that offsite spray drift may affect non-target plants. Nearby desirable vegetation is therefore a practical risk, even when it is not part of the treatment target. Follow the product label’s directions for application conditions and drift control.

The bromacil label discussed above gives product-specific warnings: the product is harmful if swallowed, causes moderate eye irritation, may cause skin sensitization, can harm non-target plants and adjacent habitat, and must not be applied directly to water or where surface water is present. It requires handlers to wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, shoes, socks, and specified chemical-resistant gloves, and prohibits entry to treated areas until sprays have dried. These directions apply to that product’s label; PPE and re-entry requirements differ among formulations.

For glyphosate, EPA’s 2017 assessment concluded it was “not likely to be carcinogenic to humans,” while the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified it as “probably carcinogenic to humans.” EPA says the assessments differ in scope and methodology and that it is updating its evaluation. Check EPA’s current page for any published update rather than treating the 2017 assessment or an anticipated update as the final current position. EPA: Glyphosate.

When a chemical bare-ground treatment is the wrong fit

Do not use a product if its label excludes the site or if you cannot meet its precautions. In particular, a product labeled for non-cropland should not be assumed appropriate in a residential or recreational area. Where the goal is simply to remove existing growth and protect nearby planting, consider non-chemical removal or a method that avoids spraying desirable plants. For a construction area, physical removal may also be a better fit when the surface will soon be excavated, paved, or otherwise disturbed; it avoids selecting a soil-active herbicide for a short-lived need.
